Aussie Travis Head is enjoying the form of his life in ongoing Ashes 2025-26 series with three hundreds and 600 runs in nine innings of five Tests. There one more innings left for Australia to bat and Head can very much become the first Aussie opener to score 600 runs in a single Ashes since 2000. The batter also has hit three hundred in the series with two of them being 150-plus. His 163 in the first innings of Ashes Test was his 7th 150-plus Test score but the dashing batter still hasn't scored a single double ton to which he says: 'Beggers can’t be choosers.'
Head speaks on not scoring a Test double ton
After scoring 163 in Sydney, Head was told by reporters that he has seven 150-plus Test scores but not a single double hundred, to which he replied with a laugh: "Beggars can’t be choosers. It’s a pretty s**t stat, isn’t it. I’d much rather 160 or 170 than zero to 10. I won’t complain about that."Head was the makeshift opener for Australia after Usman Khawaja suffered back spasm and could not open in the first Test in Perth. Star India batter Virat Kohli was greeted by an ocean of fans as he arrived in Vadodara on Wednesday, January 7, ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Earlier, the Delhi-born cricketer had landed in Mumbai after ringing in the New Year 2026 in Dubai with his family and close friends. Chaos broke out at the Vadodara airport as excited supporters chanted his name and tried to get a glimpse of the former India captain. Fans raised their phones for selfies, and security had to step in as Kohli made his way to his vehicle.

Elsewhere, India suffered a setback in mixed doubles as Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto exited in the opening round after a close three-game loss to American pair Presley Smith and Jennie Gai. Later in the day, India’s top men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are set to begin their campaign against Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan and Lee Jhe-Hue.

Indian badminton players were handed a tricky draw on the home turf as 2022 champion Lakshya Sen was pitted in an all-Indian battle against the up and coming Ayush Shetty while former world champion PV Sindhu will face Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen in the opening round of the India Open Super 750 badminton tournament to be played at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here from January 13-18. The India Open, one of the most prestigious tournament on the BWF World Tour, will be moving from the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium to a much bigger multi-purpose hall within the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex. The players will also get to understand and test the conditions as this will also be the venue for the BWF World Championships to be held in August later this year. And if the Indian contingent were hoping for a slightly easier opening round, then they were clearly not granted that wish. From the Indian perspective, Lakshya facing former world junior bronze medallist Ayush Shetty would mean that only three of the four Indian men’s singles in fray would have a chance to make it to the second round. And whoever manages to go through in this all-Indian clash is likely to face fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei or Kenta Nishimoto of Japan . Nguyen, ranked 22 in the world, is one of the most improved player on the circuit last year and if she manages to get through the Vietnamese then second seed Wang Zhi Yi or her Chinese teammate Gao Fang Jie awaits her in the second round. Malvika Bansod, returning after a long injury break and playing in the tournament with her protected ranking, will face Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei in the opening round. In the doubles category, former champions Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have been handed a relatively easy opener against USA’s Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith. England number three Jacob Bethell called his unbeaten 142 against Australia at the SCG a ‘very special’ inning, as he held on end, keeping England afloat in their quest to save this Test. Ashes came alive for the 22-year-old, who notched up his maiden Test hundred, also his first First-Class ton, in the fifth and final Ashes match in Sydney. His family celebrated his brilliant knock, cheering from the stands. His knock, however, helped England avoid getting all out on the fourth day, with their scorecard reading 302 for eight, leading by 119 runs. "It's pretty special, it's not really sunk in yet. I haven't really had time to kind of reflect on it," Bethell said.
Cummins calls Smith ‘better’ than Bradman
Steve Smith, Australia’s stand-in captain for the fifth Ashes Test at the SCG, averages close to 56 in the whites and is looked up to by many as Australia’s greatest Test batter since Don Bradman. "In the last few hours, there's been a narrative suggesting I was 'dropped' from the BPL. That is not true. I made a personal decision to opt out. For me, my nation comes first—always. And I value the game of cricket far beyond any single assignment. I've been privileged to serve this sport for years with honesty, respect, and passion. That won't change. I'll continue to stand for integrity, for clarity, and for the spirit of the game," Pathak said in a public statement. Ashes 2025-26: Ben Stokes sustains groin injury as England look at defeat in Sydney Test

England rookie Jacob Bethell plundered a chanceless maiden Test century on Wednesday (Jan 7) in Sydney, as England reeled in Australia and then built a tenuous 119-run lead to leave the fifth and final Ashes Test on a knife-edge. The dark horses, New Zealand, will play three of their four league matches at the Chepauk in Chennai, thus picking a spin-heavy squad.

The upcoming ISL season will feature 91 matches and will be played in a single-leg home-and-away format. Each team will play half its matches at home and the rest away. East Bengal has been saying from the first day that the league will happen. This country has so many fans who love football, a government which supports sports and a federation. In such a scenario, the league not happening is something we could never digest,” East Bengal senior club official Debarata Sarkar was quoted as saying to Sportstar.
10 clubs confirm their participation
So far, 10 clubs, including East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, have officially confirmed their participation via email. The remaining four clubs asked for 24 hours to take a final call. However, with no top-flight men’s football played in the country so far this season, the Sports Ministry pushed for a faster resolution.

The announcement comes at a crucial time for Indian football, with several top-division clubs having suspended first-team operations and foreign players leaving in search of playing opportunities elsewhere. “We want football to start, and as a club, we want to reaffirm that we will be playing in the league. We are thankful to the government, the federation and also the clubs for having looked at the larger picture, keeping Indian football in mind, and making this thing (the ISL) finally happen.” NorthEast United CEO Mandar Tamhane was quoted as saying.
INR 25 crore central pool for ISL
The AIFF also confirmed that the 2025–26 I-League will be held around the same time, though in a shortened format with 55 matches. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey revealed that an INR 25 crore central pool has been created to conduct the ISL.

The Indian Super League 2025–26 will start on February 14 after AIFF’s emergency meeting. All 14 clubs are expected to participate as top-flight football returns to India following weeks of uncertainty.

AIFF gives green light to ISL 2025–26 season, confirms February 14 start

Star Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma has slipped from the top spot in the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings, following the latest update released on Tuesday (Jan 6). The off-spinner dropped to second place after Australia’s Annabel Sutherland regained the No. 1 position, edging ahead by a single rating point. Despite India completing a dominant 5–0 clean sweep against Sri Lanka, Deepti’s figures in the final T20I were not enough to keep her at the top. She returned with one wicket for 28 runs in the series decider, while Sutherland’s consistent performances helped her move ahead with 736 rating points, one more than Deepti. The Australian fast-bowling all-rounder had earlier reached the top spot in August 2025 before briefly losing it. This is the second time Deepti has been displaced from No. 1, with a similar situation occurring last year when Pakistan spinner Sadia Iqbal allowed Sutherland to take over the rankings. Also read | 'Easiest format': Sanjay Manjrekar’s strong take on Virat Kohli’s Test retirement
Harmanpreet gains advantage in batting rankings
While Deepti dropped a place, India still had positives in the latest update. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur climbed two spots to reach 13th in the batting rankings after her match-winning knock in the fifth T20I at Thiruvananthapuram. Harmanpreet smashed 68 runs off 43 balls to guide India to a 15-run win and earn the Player of the Match award. India’s top-order batters continued to hold firm positions, with Smriti Mandhana remaining third and Shafali Verma staying sixth in the batting rankings. However, Jemimah Rodrigues slipped out of the top 10 and is now placed 12th.
Charani climbs five places in bowling rankings
There was also some movement among Indian bowlers, as left-arm spinner Shree Charani made notable progress by climbing five places to reach 47th. Sri Lanka’s Kavisha Dilhari and captain Chamari Athapaththu also gained ground in the bowling rankings after the series. India’s commanding performance against Sri Lanka underlined the team’s growing depth, even if individual rankings saw minor shifts. Deepti Sharma remains one of the most reliable bowlers in women’s T20 cricket, and with key tournaments ahead, the battle for the top spot in the rankings is far from settled.
