Having lost a close contest against Germany in the semifinal, India were in the bronze medal match against Spain. It was a poor start for the eight-time Olympic champions as they conceded a goal in the first quarter and were on the backfoot before Harmanpreet Singh equalised in the second quarter. The Men in Blue then scored the winning goal in the third quarter when skipper Harmanpreet scored again from a penalty corner.
Spain pushed hard for an equaliser but were denied a clear sight of the goal. Spain had two penalty corners in the dying moment of the match but were undone asPR Sreejesh made two excellent saves to help India win the bronze medal.
