Former two-time Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chairman and a career diplomat, Shaharyar Khan, passed away in Lahore, Pakistan, on Saturday (March 23), aged 89. Known for restoring ties between India and Pakistan during his first tenure as PCB head from 2003 to 2006, Shaharyar breathed his last after battling a prolonged illness.
Cousin of former India captain and great Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Shaharyar Khan, had served as Pakistan's foreign secretary from 1990 to 1994 and as a High Commissioner in New Delhi and the United Kingdom. During his time with the Pakistan Cricket Board, Shaharyar served twice, with his second term from 2014 to 2017.
During his first assignment as PCBboss, India toured Pakistan twice in 2004 and 2006, while Pakistan travelled to India in 2005.
Although India and Pakistan last played a bilateral series more than a decade ago in 2012/13, Shaharyar expressed his regretin failing to revive regular Tests between both arch-rivals during his final term in an interview last year. India and Pakistan last played a Test series 14 years ago in 2007.
However, one controversy during his time that made headlines worldwide was the Pakistan team’s decision to forfeit the Oval Test against England in 2006, for which he blamed the then-team captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq.
Current PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed his condolences on the passing away of Shaharyar Khan, saying he was a fine administrator and served his country’s cricket board with utmost dedication.
“On behalf of the PCB, I express my deep condolences and grief over the passing of former Chairman Shaharyar Khan. He was a fine administrator and served Pakistan Cricket with utmost dedication.
“Pakistan Cricket will stay indebted to the late Shaharyar Khan for his commendable role as head of the board and for his services in the growth and development of the game in the country,” said Naqvi.
