Aussie captain Marsh hopes to regain full fitness in time for T20 World Cup

Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh wishes to regain full fitness ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, starting June 1 in the Caribbean and the USA. Marsh added he hopes not to suffer any injury setbacks in the lead-up to the tournament, with the former champions facing Oman in their first league game on June 6 in Barbados.

Marsh was part of the Delhi Capitals squad in IPL 2024, but after his appearance for the franchise on April 3, he returned home to get treated for a right hamstring strain. Two weeks later, the Capitals informed everyone of Marsh missing the remainder of the tournament as the injury was taking longer than expected to heal.

Speaking to the media for the first time since the T20 World Cup squad announcement, Marsh addressed the final 15 and how he feels about his injury status.

"The hammy (hamstring) is good,it'scoming along really well,"Marsh said."It'spretty much exactly where we want it to be.It'sone of those things.Justgot to get it right over the next three weeks and get on the plane.

"If we had to play tomorrow, I would be ina bit oftrouble. Still a couple of weeks away, and the timing probably sits perfectlybarringany setbacks,”the newly-appointed T20I captain noted.

Meanwhile,Australia’s15-man squadis filledwith match-winners in each department - batting, bowling or the all-rounders. Australia retained most of the players from the past edition at home but overlooked an exciting prospect in Jake Fraser-McGurk. While his exclusion is understandable, given how the Aussies go about backing players and picking squads for multi-team tournaments, Marsh sounded confident in chasing another ICC trophy with the team at the helm.

"Anytimethere'sa World Cup team picked, there'sonly 15, and some guys have to miss out,"Marsh said and added, "But I thinkwe'vegot a really great squad thatwe'vepicked,we'vegot a lot of versatility, a lot of experience. And that brings a lot of excitement."

Brisbane to host training camps for non-IPL players

While most of the chosen players for the 20-team tournament are busy playing the IPL in India, those away will attend the two training camps in Brisbane over the next two weeks to prepare for the T20 World Cup.

Josh Hazlewood, Ashton Agar, Adam Zampa, Josh Inglis and Captain Marsh are the ones to train there before flying to the West Indies and the USA for the T20 World Cup.

Per the latest report, Marsh could be part of both camps, keeping it light in the first one. Moreover, outside of the first squad, Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson – two players who could travel as part of the reserves, will also be there.
