Myanmar militias claim to have launched drone attacks on airport, air force base and army headquarters

Nay Pyi Taw, the capital and third-largest city of Myanmar, came under a mass drone attack on the country's embattled junta government on Thursday (Apr 4). No casualties were reported.
The opposition, the National Unity Government (NUG), claimed to have deployed at least 29 drones armed with explosives to the airport, air force base and army headquarters.
"The synchronised drone operations were simultaneously executed against Nay Pyi Taw targeting both the military headquarters… and Alar air base," NUG's deputy secretary Mg Mg Swe said as quoted by BBC.
Meanwhile, the military-run Myawaddy TV said that the attempt by "terrorists" to destroy "important locations" in Naypyitaw had been foiled. They were said to have shot down 13 fixed-wing drones, four were reportedly carrying explosives.
Military-run Myawaddy TV's news anchor read in the bulletin, "As the terrorist action, the fixed-wing drones attempted to attack in Alar township and Zeyathiri township in Naypyitaw at 10 amtoday."

"The air defence forces have detected the drones and shot down the fixed-wing drones in advance. The force has anticipated exploding two drones and another 13 drones including four armed drones, were crashed down," the anchor further said.
"The security forces are searching other drones which were shot down on the ground. And no casualties and damage were caused to people and buildings," the anchor added.
What is the National Unity Government?
NUG is an alliance of anti-junta groups formed to undermine army rule after a 2021 coup, in which Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted. She is still in prison.
NUG said that the "simultaneously executed, coordinated drone attacks" were carried out by its armed affiliate, the People's Defence Forces (PDF), on the military's headquarters and an air force base.
"This was a success. This drone attack was long-range and a stronger attack than normal. We have plans to do more," NUG spokesperson Kyaw Zaw said.
"This is a time when the junta is forcing conscription and causing fear for the people. With this attack on their nerve centre, Naypyitaw, we want to highlight that they don't have a safe place," Zaw added.
