Generally, organs meant for transplant are flown to the city airport and then transported to hospitals via ambulance through a specially cleared route known as a 'green corridor'.The heart meant for transplant belonged to a teenage boy, who sustained a traumatic brain injury in a road accident, and tragically succumbed to his injuries and was declared brain-dead on the morning of Friday, (Dec 26), at Thanjavur, about 350 km away from Chennai. With the consent of his family, his heart and small intestine were retrieved for transplantation from Thanjavur government hospital.To save the life of a 33-year-old patient from Maharashtra with end-stage heart failure, the team at MGM Healthcare, Chennai, decided to transport the precious organ by a special helicopter from Thanjavur to Chennai city. The helicopter landed at the grounds of D.G Vaishnav College, which is a few kilometres away from the MGM hospital. A green corridor set up by the Chennai police then facilitated the speedy transport of the organ to the hospital.According to MGM, the green corridor had ensured that the heart reached the hospital two minutes, following which the transplantation procedure was carried out by a team headed by Dr. K R Balakrishnan, Director of the Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support at MGM Healthcare, the transplant was performed with great success, offering the recipient a new lease of life.In a statement, MGM Healthcare extended heartfelt appreciation to D.G. The death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose remains one of the biggest historical mysteries of India. More than 80 years have passed, and there have been several claims and counterclaims surrounding his death, but no conclusive evidence of his death has been found. Bose's daughter, Austrian-born economist Anita Bose Pfaff, urged scientific proof, DNA testing, not political narratives and has not fully endorsed the official plane-crash version. According to a PTI report, she has urged the remains to be brought to India and the facts to be established conclusively.<h2>How did Netaji die?</h2>The most prominent idea is that Netaji died in a plane crash on his way to Taiwan on August 18, 1945, and his ashes are at the Renkoji temple near Tokyo. The Ministry of Home Affairs, in May 2017, in response to an RTI, confirmed that Netaji died in a plane crash on August 18, 1947, based on the reports from the &nbsp;Shah Nawaz Committee, Justice GD Khosla Commission and Justice Mukherjee Commission. However, these three reports are contradictory in essence. This leaves a lot to interpretation: There is no minimum wage guarantee under the Social Security Code specifically for gig workers.Ride-hailing platforms like Ola and Uber generally classify gig workers as independent contractors or “partners” rather than employees. This allows flexibility (read: not giving full employment benefits) for the platforms and limited protections for the workers, leading to complaints.Other issues include high commissions taken by ride-hailing apps, often up to 30 per cent per ride, which reduces net earnings for drivers. For all big companies, labour is a necessary nuisance. Indian gig workers are the backbone of the country’s e-commerce giants, food delivery apps and app-based transport services. But for over a decade, they have not benefited from the massive profits made by most of these companies. While keeping them as contract workers without any employment benefits, the firms involved seem to have indirectly contributed to their unionising. The firms forgot that the gig worker has the ability to grind businesses to a halt, quite literally. The Christmas day strike, in which some 400,000 gig workers reportedly took part, indicated this. The workers are threatening a similar action on New Year’s Eve. Here is why the gig worker strikes should be taken seriously by the industry. The delivery workers’ strike: The first shot has been fired, but what do they want? Delivery workers across India held a nationwide flash strike on Thursday (Dec 25). This was organised by unions like Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT), with solidarity expressed by drivers of food delivery apps. The workers are demanding better wages, safer conditions, social security, transparent pay and respect for rights. They want an end to arbitrary account deactivations without an appeal process, unsafe and ultra-fast delivery demands, and better labour protections. Services were disrupted in several major cities. The strikes by Ola/Uber/Rapido drivers in July in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and in June in Jaipur were led by unions like IFAT and Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch. Under these rules, they are supposed to get life and disability insurance, accident insurance, health and maternity benefits, provident fund (PF), gratuity for fixed-term workers after one year, old-age protection and/or pension. These schemes are to be funded through a social security fund to which platform players are required to contribute 1–2 per cent of their annual turnover, capped at 5 per cent of payments to workers. Labour reforms are on paper but not implemented fully Even as these provisions are in force, progress has been slow on schemes, registration mechanisms, and state-level rules to implement them. Gig workers are yet to get full access to these benefits, as companies are only waking up to the law and setting up mechanisms. While some states have already pioneered specific gig worker welfare laws, many lag in this direction. Rajasthan’s Platform-Based Gig Workers (Registration and Welfare) Act, 2023 established a Welfare Board, mandatory registration of workers and aggregators, a welfare fund via a transaction cess and grievance redressal. Yet, full implementation has been delayed. Karnataka’s Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025 has transaction-based fees and stronger grievance mechanisms. Other states like Jharkhand and Bihar passed similar laws in 2025. For instance, even the new labour code does not classify gig workers as employees, which preserves platform flexibility. The idea is that gig workers could get limited entitlements without full employment protections. This leaves a lot to interpretation: There is no minimum wage guarantee under the Social Security Code specifically for gig workers. Ride-hailing platforms like Ola and Uber generally classify gig workers as independent contractors or “partners” rather than employees. This allows flexibility (read: not giving full employment benefits) for the platforms and limited protections for the workers, leading to complaints. Other issues include high commissions taken by ride-hailing apps, often up to 30 per cent per ride, which reduces net earnings for drivers. Many cab drivers earn ₹400–800 net per day after expenses, including fuel, vehicle maintenance and loan repayments, even as they put in more time than traditional employees, up to 14 hours. Some states have guidelines such as Motor Vehicles Aggregator Guidelines 2025 which cap the login time of drivers at 12 hours per day. Hire and fire at will: From arbitrary account suspensions to toll on physical and mental health Since the collapse of gainful employment in post-pandemic years, there is an oversupply of drivers in the gig economy, whcih actually lowers the earnings per worker. As they are only “partners” and not employees, delivery and driving apps have the ability to arbitrarily suspend gig workers’ accounts without a proper appeal process. This often leads to a sudden loss of income for them. Historically, no PF, health insurance, paid leave, or gratuity has been given to gig workers, who are also expected to bear the costs of risks like accidents and repairs. Many drivers take high-interest loans for vehicles, encouraged by initial incentives given by the apps, which are later dropped. Gig workers often face physical and mental health issues, with surveys reporting violence or harassment against them. Profit over worker welfare can lead to collapse of the system The recent events in aviation is a good example of how, when rules on labour welfare are strictly implemented, those who did not build trustworthy systems will collapse, hurting both the consumer and the worker. The platforms that use gig workers, some of whom are still operating at heavy losses, are prioritising growth, scale and low fares for customers. But the algorithmic fare controls and arbitrary changes of incentives are hurting the workers. However, at the beginning of the 17th century, the conflict started to take more political and religious shapes with the execution of Guru Arjun Dev in 1606, for refusing to alter his teachings and blessing the eldest son of Jahangir, Prince Khusrau, who later revolted against his father.<h2>Guru Gobind Singh and the Khalsa</h2>With the growing threat from the Muslim rulers at Delhi, Sikhs sought to defend their religious autonomy. It is to be noted that Guru Gobind Singh refused to play the role of an aggressor and vowed never to strike except in self-defence. Despite being outnumbered, Guru Gobind Singh and his Sikhs defended Anandpur Shahib fort bravely. After months of siege, they were tricked by the Mughal-Hill Raja alliance into leaving the Anandpur Sahib fort.<h2>Battle of Chamkur and martyrdom of the elder Sahibzadas</h2>In 1705, 18-year-old Sahibzada Ajit Singh and 14-year-old Sahibzada Jujhar Singh were martyred in the battle against the Mughal forces while leaving the fort. He was assisted by his two muslim devotees, Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan.&nbsp;<h2>Youngest martyr of history&nbsp;</h2>The two youngest 9-year-old Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, 6-year-old Sahibzada Fateh Singh, were captured by the Mughals, and they were pressured to convert to Islam. The tyranny of the Mughal governor Wazir Khan of Sirhind faced the courage and resistance of the young Shaibzadas. They were imprisoned in an open tower known as the Thanda Burj (Cold tower) in the peak of winter, along with their Mata Gujri. Despite immense pressure, they remained steadfast and refused to abandon Sikhism. They were bricked alive by Wazir Khan in one of the cruellest episodes of communal violence in Indian history. Their grandmother, Mata Gujri, lost her life in freezing cold, hearing the death of her two grandchildren. 6-year-old Shahibzada Fateh Singh became the youngest martyr in history to sacrifice his life consciously for his ideals.<h2>Most expensive pieces of land</h2>After Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, Sahibzada Fateh Singh were executed, Wazir Khan demanded that if anyone wanted to cremate their body should purchase the land at an exorbitant price. Indian President Droupadi Murmu distributed the ‘Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar’ awards at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the day of Veer Bal Diwas on Friday (Dec 26). Among the recipients was Archana Sivaramakrishnan, who accepted the award on behalf of her late daughter, Vyoma Priya. The eight-year-old girl had bravely tried to save the life of a six-year-old boy from an electrified slide in their apartment park, but lost her own life in the process.While accepting the award, Archana Sivaramakrishnan recounted the courageous actions of her daughter, saying, “I am receiving the bravery award on behalf of our daughter, Vyoma Priya. She was 8 years old when she was playing in the children’s park in our apartment complex. A slide in the park was installed over a damaged underground cable, which electrified the slide. A 6-year-old boy playing on it fell, and our Vyoma tried to rescue him, but was caught in the current herself. It is a bittersweet moment for us to be getting this award... We wish she could have been here to receive this award herself...”

Family members of the Unnao rape survivor, along with women's rights activists, staged a protest outside the Delhi High Court on Friday (Dec 25), objecting to the conditional bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The protest drew swift intervention from police, who warned demonstrators that protests were not permitted outside the court. "Demonstrating here is prohibited and illegal. Legal action may be taken against you after five minutes. If you want to protest, go to Jantar Mantar." Earlier, the Delhi High Court suspended Sengar’s life sentence in the Unnao rape case, granting him bail on the condition that he furnish a bond of Rs 15 lakh. The court also imposed strict restrictions, directing him to remain in Delhi, avoid a five-kilometre radius around the survivor's residence, and have no contact with the victim or her family. She insisted that Sengar’s bail must be cancelled and announced her intention to approach the Supreme Court of India. "His bail should be rejected... We will knock on the doors of the Supreme Court. We have lost faith in the High Court... If we don't get justice in the Supreme Court, we will go to another country...," she told ANI. Referring to her husband’s custodial death, she added that those responsible should face the harshest punishment: "The person guilty of my husband's murder should be hanged immediately". Women's rights activist Yogita Bhayana said the protest was peaceful and aimed solely at seeking justice for the survivor. She stressed that the group wanted the court to urgently hear their petition challenging the bail order. "Today, we have come to the High Court peacefully to appeal that the injustice done to our daughter be revoked and that the petition we are about to file be heard. If we do not get justice, we will protest, and that is our right..." Bhayana said. Also read | A 'huge setback' Political reactions also followed. Congress leader Mumtaz Patel described the bail order as a "huge setback" and warned that it could seriously undermine the confidence of women in the legal system. "This is a huge setback, the way the High Court has given Sengar a free pass on a technicality. This is setting a very bad precedent in the country... How much their confidence must have been shattered by this ruling. Not just theirs, but that of women across the country," Patel said. Despite the bail in the rape case, Sengar will remain in jail for now, as he has not been granted bail in the separate case relating to the custodial death of the survivor's father. He is serving a 10-year sentence for the crime.

A case has been registered in this regard at the local police station.<h2>Online betting apps linked to suicides</h2>This comes immediately after Paladugu Sai, a taxi driver in Hyderabad ended his life amid mounting debt on online betting apps, reported NDTV.&nbsp;Twenty-four-year-old Sai, a native of the Yadadri-Bhuvanagari district, had been addicted to online betting for the last two years. he used to borrow money from friends and also took bank loans to continue betting, said police, reported the media house.&nbsp;Sai had a debt of Rs 15 lakh when he committed suicide, said the police.&nbsp;In another such case a 32-year-old civil contractor from Madhya Pradesh allegedly died by suicide in his house in Bhopal last week after losing nearly Rs 30 lakh due to his addiction to online gaming.&nbsp;A note recovered from his house said that he borrowed money from people in order to play an online game called Aviator.&nbsp;Earlier in August, a 38-year-old man from Manesar in Haryana’s Gurugram district also ended his life due to the Rs 5 lakh loan he had on him for gambling on online apps. &nbsp;

The Toronto Police said in a statement that the police responded to a call for an ‘unknown trouble’ in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area at approximately 3:34 pm. Officers responded to reports of a person with serious injuries and found Avasthi with a gunshot wound. The police added that the student was pronounced dead at the scene, while the suspect(s) had fled the area before the officers arrived at the scene.“On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at approximately 3:34 p.m., police responded to a call for an Unknown Trouble in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area,” the Toronto police said in a statement. “The victim has been identified as Shivank Avasthi, 20, of Toronto.”The incident marks Toronto’s 41st Homicide of 2025. The police have also urged people to contact them if they have any information related to the crime.

Earlier this month, two youths from Punjab were shot dead in what police described as a targeted attack in southeast Edmonton on December 12. The victims were identified as Gurdeep Singh, 27, from Bareh, and Ranveer Singh, 18, from Uddat Saidewala village near Budhlada in Mansa district. Reports suggested the two were headed to attend a friend's birthday celebrations when they were shot.

"An FIR has been filed against Santa Claus's skit. Thanks to social media and your collective strength, the BJP is facing considerable trouble today.
