West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, Puducherry Elections Result Highlights: Counting of votes underway since 8 am on Monday (May 4) across 823 assembly constituencies spanning West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry, deciding the outcome of high-stakes elections that witnessed record voter participation. Counting of votes for by-elections to eight Assembly constituencies in six states across the country will also take place today. The polls, held amid concerns over the massive SIR exercise, carry significant national political implications.
This marks the biggest single day of election results since the 2024 general elections. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala remain key battlegrounds where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has yet to form a government, making them crucial to the party’s expansion ambitions. The ruling party is also eyeing another term in Assam and a second term in Puducherry.
The elections are also critical for prominent regional leaders—Mamata Banerjee, aiming for a fourth straight term in West Bengal. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, won a decisive landslide victory in 2021. MK Stalin is contesting for a second consecutive tenure in Tamil Nadu. The Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), led by the DMK, won the election, ending a decade-long rule by the AIADMK in last elections. Pinarayi Vijayan is striving for a third successive term in Kerala. In the previous election, the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), made history by securing a second consecutive term—an outcome not seen in the state since 1977.
In a historic debut, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has secured a landslide victory in the Perambur constituency, winning by a massive margin of 53,715 votes.
The actor-turned-politician is also maintaining a steady lead in Tiruchirappalli (East), reflecting a broader blockbuster performance for his party across the state.
In a post vibrating with political triumph and emotional gravity, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari declared a "New Dawn for Sonar Bangla" following a historic electoral mandate.
In a post on X, Adhikari framed the BJP's performance as a definitive rejection of the status quo and a full-throated embrace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the East.
The BJP has secured a commanding lead in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 202 seats and leading in 4 more, according to the Election Commission of India. The TMC has won 71 seats and is leading in 10, while the Congress is leading in 2 seats. The AJUP has won 2 seats, and the CPI(M) is leading in 1.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat by over 15,000 votes to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari also won the Nandigram seat by over 9,000 votes.
In a major political moment, BJP candidate Ratna Debnath has secured a decisive victory by a substantial margin of 28,836 votes in the Panihati constituency, a seat that has been held by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) since 2011.
According to the final results after all 13 rounds of EVM counting, Debnath polled 87,977 votes, comfortably defeating Tirthankar Ghosh of the All India Trinamool Congress, who managed 59,141 votes.
Meanwhile, Kalatan Dasgupta from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) trailed far behind with 24,032 votes. The outcome underscores a significant shift in voter preference in Panihati, with the BJP emerging dominant in a constituency that has traditionally seen strong competition among regional parties.
Following a strong showing in the latest round of assembly elections across four states and one Union Territory, BJP National President Nitin Nabin declared the results a "historic mandate" and a resounding validation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Expressing gratitude to the public for their overwhelming support, Nabin expressed a bold vision for the party's future, specifically targeting a breakthrough in Southern India.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the BJP "looted" more than 100 seats and termed the Election Commission "the BJP's commission," calling the victory "immoral" and "illegal."
She said she had complained to the Chief Officer and Manoj Agrawal, but no action was taken. She termed the conduct of the Election Commission, along with the deployment of Central Forces and the role of the Prime Minister and Home Minister, as illegal.
Talking to the reporters, CM Banerjee said, "More than 100 seats BJP looted. The Election Commission is the BJP's commission. I complained to the CO and also Manoj Agrawal, but they are not doing anything. Do you think this is a victory? It is an immoral victory, not a moral victory. Whatever the Election Commission has done, along with the Central Forces and the PM & Home Minister, is totally illegal. It is loot, loot, loot. We will bounce back."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is trailing by 563 votes after 16 rounds of counting as of 8:06 pm, with BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari in the lead.
While addressing BJP workers at Delhi BJP headquarters, PM Modi said, “There should be talk of change, not revenge; let us put an end to this endless cycle of violence forever.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Last year, on November 14, when the Bihar election results were declared, I had told you from this very spot at the BJP headquarters that the Ganga flows beyond Bihar all the way to Gangasagar. And today, with the victory in Bengal, the lotus has bloomed from Gangotri to Gangasagar. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and now West Bengal—these states along the Ganga are today governed by the BJP and the NDA.”
Today's victory is not only the victory of Indian democracy but the victory of our constitution and our democratic process. The voting of around 93 % in West Bengal itself is historic. In other states, there were record voting and participation of women was huge.
This shows the brightest value of our democracy.
