Maharashtra Dy CM Ajit Pawar died after a Learjet 45 crash-landed at Baramati airport. All five onboard, including pilot and crew, were killed. DGCA, AAIB probe is underway.
Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar has died after his plane crashed during landing at Baramati airport. DGCA has confirmed that there are no survivors in the Baramati plane crash in which Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was on board. Pawar was on a tour to Maharashtra’s Baramati and was set to hold four election rallies. The charter plane was travelling from Mumbai to Baramati when it crash landed at 8:45 am. According to reports, police and other party workers have reached the site of the crash.
The Learjet 45 aircraft had departed from Mumbai’s GA Terminal at 8:10 am. However, as it approached the runway at Baramati airport, it crash-landed, killing all on board. An investigation has been launched by India’s civil aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). The initial probe revealed that Pawar was critically injured but still alive following the crash, but died when the aircraft exploded.
Maharashtra has declared a state mourning for three days. All government offices will remain closed, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast.
Following the incident, Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, and his sister, Supriya Sule, are reportedly heading towards the crash site.
Who was on board Ajit Pawar’s plane?
There were five people on board, including three passengers, one pilot, and one crew member. Three passengers aboard and the pilot of the plane have been identified. The three passengers included Pawar, Mumbai Police constable Vidip Jadhav and an attendant, Pinky Mali.

Mumbai Police constable Vidip Jadhav was on duty as the Personnel Security Officer (PSO) to Ajit Pawar. He was travelling with Pawar, who was set to hold meetings related 2026 Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections.
Captain Shambhavi Pathak, the pilot of Ajit Pawar’s Learjet 45, was also killed in the crash. She studied at No. 1 Air Force School, Gwalior, between 2016 and 2018 and was a member of the Madhya Pradesh Flying Club. Captain Sumit Kapoor also died in the crash.
Pawar was in Mumbai on Tuesday (Jan 17) and took part in a meeting of the Maharashtra Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, which was led by CM Devendra Fadnavis. Maharashtra Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and other officials were also present.
Ajit Pawar was the longest-serving Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra non-consecutively. He served in the position for six terms within various governments. He had worked as deputy chief minister in the cabinets of Prithviraj Chavan, Devendra Fadnavis, Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde.
