The Indian government finally signed amajor contract to make bullet-proof jackets for Indian soldiers who were in desperate need of the life-saving kit from a long time.

“The new jackets meet the most advanced GSQRs 1438 (technical parameters) standards of the Indian Army. These bullet-proof jackets have 'Boron Carbide Ceramic', which is the lightest material for ballistic protection,” said SMPP chairman S C Kansal in a statement.
1.86 lakh bullet-proof jackets will be procured for 639 crore rupees for the army and are expected to be delivered within three years.
These jackets were finalised after a series of 'stringent field evaluation trials', said Nirmala Sitharaman-led Defence Ministry.
Indianarmy has been struggling to get the life-saving kit from a very long time. In 2009 the army first made a request for more than 1.86 lakh bullet-proof jackets but the order got delayed due to no vendor cleared the trials conducted by the army.

In 2016 army made an emergency purchase of 50,000 bullet-proof jackets but as the jackets did not meet the standards that were required as it was designed on older specifications.
