A section of an under-construction THDC tunnel collapsed in Pipalkoti, Chamoli, Uttarakhand, with 15 people feared trapped and 10 rescued as rescue operations continue.
Six workers have died, 14 others were injured, while two are missing as a rush of water and debris entered a section of an under-construction tunnel at the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC) project on Thursday evening in Pipalkoti, Chamoli district.
The State Disaster Management Authority said a total of 22 people were working at the project site when a sudden flow of water rushed inside.
Of the 22 workers stranded in the tunnel, 14 were rescued, while search was underway for the two missing workers at the time of the filing of this report.
The incident was reported around 7.05pm in the 2km-long tunnel where construction work was being carried out by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC).
Rescue operations were launched immediately and teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies were deployed at the site.
It had been raining heavily in Chamoli district for the last few days. Strong currents due to rising water level in a river had swept away a bridge in the district's Niti Valley region on Monday.

Earlier, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dami confirmed that emergency rescue operations are underway. In a post on the social media platform X, Pushkar Singh Dami said that teams from the National Disaster Response Force and Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force have been dispatched to the location for clearing the debris.
“Information has been received about debris and water entering the THDC tunnel located in Peepalkoti. Considering the seriousness of the incident, teams from @NDRFHQ and @uksdrf have been immediately dispatched to the site. Instructions have been issued to all relevant agencies, including the district administration, to carry out relief and rescue operations at a war footing. I myself am in constant contact with the officials and continuously gathering updates on the situation. Our topmost priority is to safely evacuate every person trapped inside the tunnel. I pray to God for the safe well-being of all,” wrote Pushkar Singh Dhami.
