Swati Maliwal assault: BJP steps up attack on AAP amid ‘threat to her life’

A political storm has erupted in New Delhi following allegations by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal that shewas assaultedat Delhi Chief Minister ArvindKejriwal'sofficial residence. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday (May 15) staged protests outsideKejriwal'sresidence and demanded a thorough investigation intothe alleged incident.
The chief of the Delhi unit of BJP also questionedKejriwal'ssilence over the matter even as senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh earlier confirmed that the CM has taken cognisance ofMaliwal'sallegations.
“Whyisn'tthe Chief Minister saying anything? The incident happened at his residence, he should have called the police. But, he is not doing anything which throws his role in all this under suspicion,”said Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva.
Meanwhile, Naveen Jaihind, the ex-husband of the AAP MP Swati Maliwal, has alleged that there is a threat to her life and"anything could happen"to her.
On Tuesday, senior AAP leader and MP Sanjay Singh had confirmed thatKejriwal's personal secretary, Bibhav Kumar, had“misbehaved”with Maliwal. Singh also assured that Kejriwal would take strict action against the accused.
However, theBJPstepped up attacks onAAP over what it said was a delay in action.

The PMNarendraModi'spartyalso suggested that political pressure on Maliwal may have prevented her from filing a police complaint againstKejriwal'ssecretary.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has announced it will investigate the matter.Earlier,it also directed Delhi police to file an action report within 72 hours.
Notably, other opposition leaders have maintained distance from the allegations.
Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge refused to comment on the incident whereasSamajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav evaded the question.
On Monday, Delhi Police had confirmed it received two calls fromMaliwal'sphone number while she was at DelhiCM'sresidence. However, they said the AAP MPdidn'tfile an official complaint when she visited the police station.
