In the latest development from Punjab, the son of one of prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassins, Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, won the Faridkot Lok Sabha seat.

He contested the elections as an independent candidate.

Sarabjeet Singh won the electoral contest by a margin of 70,053 votes, defeating his rival, the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Karamjit Singh Anmol.

Sarabjeet polled 2,98,062 votes, while Karamjit got 2,28,009.

Congress candidate Amarjit Kaur Sahoke remained at the third spot with 2,08,889 votes, whereas Shiromani Akali Dal's Rajwinder Singh Dharamkot received 1,38,251.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded singer and MP from North West Delhi, Hans Raj Hans from the constituency, who stood fifth in the list with 1,23,533 votes.

Sarabjeet is the son of Beant Singh, Indira Gandh’s bodyguard, who was accused of killing her on Oct 31, 1984, at her residence in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star.

Both her bodyguards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, fired over 30 bullets in order to take revenge for the desecration of the Golden Temple during Operation Blue Star.

The Indian Army was directed to flush the separatists residing in the Golden Temple out of the holy shrine on the orders of Gandhi.

Sarabjeet, during campaigning, had said that he would highlight the issue of punishment for the ones responsible for the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in the year 2015 when SAD-BJP was in power.

He unsuccessfully fought the Lok Sabha polls in 2024 from the Bathinda seat.

The polling was held in the state of Punjab in the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Jun 1. 

As per the Election Commission's data, the state's voter turnout was 62.80 per cent. During the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the state had recorded a voter turnout of 65.96 per cent.
