JNU protest: Police complaints against students for wrongful restraint

A day after they encircled the administration block, preventing two senior officials from leaving the building, the Delhi Police on Friday registered two First Information Reports (FIRs) against students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

"Based on two separate complaints filed by the officials, two FIRs have been registered with the Vasant Kunj North Police Station," the police officer said.

One more FIR has been filed against students who blocked the road near the administration office, demanding withdrawal of compulsory attendance ruling of the university.

The students, who had insisted on meeting the vice chancellor to discuss issues related to 75 per cent compulsory attendance, conducted a gherao of the JNU's administration block.

Hundreds of students, led by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU), also picketed outside all the gates of the building and confronted and stopped senior university officials who tried to go out.'

The names of the JNU's students union president, vice president, secretary and general secretary have been included in the FIR. The FIR is also against unknown people.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Friday directed the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) not to obstruct the vice chancellor and other staff from entering the administrative block to carry out their work.

The high court passed the interim order on JNU's plea which said that the protest near the administrative block was hampering its day-to-day functioning, including the disbursal of salaries in connection with the Seventh Pay Commission.
