India weather update: Bengaluru rain breaks 133-year record; IMD issues orange alert for rains in six states

The severe rains that pelted Bengaluru on June 2 resulted in the most rainfall recorded on a single day in June in 133 years. On June 2, Bengaluru recorded 111.1 mm of rain.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, “Bengaluru rains break the 133-year-old record with the highest rainfall in a single day in June. Bengaluru city has seen an unprecedented 111.1 mm of rainfall on June 2, 2024.”

"The previous record was 101.6 mm rainfall, which was recorded on June 16, 1891," according to @BngWeather's X post.

IMD issues orange alerts for multiple areas

There may be rain and thunderstorms in certain areas over the plains of Northwest India from June 5 to June 7, coinciding with the impending Western Disturbance. For the areas listed below, IMD has issued an orange alert for June 3, indicating isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.5-204.4 mm) rainfall.

From June 3 to June 5, there is a good chance of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya, with severe rain on June 6 and 7. Over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from June 3 to June 6, over Arunachal Pradesh on June 3 and 4, and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on June 5 and 6, isolated heavy precipitation is predicted.

Heatwave conditions to persist inPunjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and other areas

In its most recent weather prediction, IMD stated that throughout the next four to five days, isolated pockets of heatwave conditions of lower severity are predicted over portions of northwest and east India.

On June 3, 2024, there's a good chance of heatwave conditions in a few areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and small areas of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, and East Madhya Pradesh.

A heatwave is also predicted for June 3 in a few isolated areas of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and East Madhya Pradesh; June 4 and 5 in Odisha; June 4–7 in Jharkhand; June 5 in Punjab, Haryana–Chandigarh–Delhi; and June 6–7 in Bihar.

Isolated parts of Odisha are expected to see hot and humid weather until June 7; Bihar, Konkan, and Goa, through June 5; and Gangetic West Bengal, June 6 and 7.
