In its most recent weather prediction, IMD stated that throughout the next four to five days, isolated pockets of heatwave conditions of lower severity are predicted over portions of northwest and east India.

On June 3, 2024, there's a good chance of heatwave conditions in a few areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and small areas of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, and East Madhya Pradesh.

A heatwave is also predicted for June 3 in a few isolated areas of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and East Madhya Pradesh; June 4 and 5 in Odisha; June 4–7 in Jharkhand; June 5 in Punjab, Haryana–Chandigarh–Delhi; and June 6–7 in Bihar.&nbsp;

As the scorching heat engulfs the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioned that Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana will experience a heatwave from May 18 to May 20.&nbsp;

As per IMD, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature surpasses 40°C in the plains; 37°C in coastal regions and 30°C in hilly regions, even as the deviation from normal is between 4.5°C and 6.4°C above the average maximum.

This will be followed by other parts of northern India and Bihar experiencing similar conditions over the next five days, the weather forecasting agency added.&nbsp;

At the same time, temperatures in other parts including northwest India and Gujarat will go up to two to three degrees. This increase in heat is because of weakening western disturbances which is a weather pattern responsible for keeping the temperature down.

“There is no immediate chance of rain. There is also a subsidence of hot air, which is heating the surface due to an anticyclone over northwest India. Soon, there will be an advection of hot air towards UP and Bihar also. Conditions will remain very hot for the next seven days,” said M Mohapatra, director general of IMD.

Advection is the transfer of heat through the horizontal movement of air which is more significant than the vertical movement. In the middle latitudes, day-to-day variation in weather is caused by advection only.

This comes with the increased peril of heat-related illnesses because of prolonged exposure to the sun. Moreover, people doing heavy work or having high health concerns are also said to be cautious of it.

"Forecasts indicate that western India, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat from May 18-20, 2024. The event will include unusually warm nighttime temperatures, which can intensify the risk of heat-related illness and death," the Climate Central group said in an analysis.

Human-caused climate change made these conditions much more likely,&nbsp; Climate Central said.&nbsp;

“There is an anticyclone over West Rajasthan and Pakistan, causing the incursion of hot air from Balochistan and Thar desert. Heatwaves have started in parts of Rajasthan and some parts of Delhi also met the heatwave criteria on Wednesday. The area impacted by heatwaves will increase,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president, of climate and meteorology at Skymet Weather.

Contrary to this, the weather in south of India has been better with instances of rain across peninsular India.

This is due to the cyclonic circulation over Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and the adjoining southern fringes of the state.

This circulation outlined the likelihood of widespread light to moderate rainfall alongside thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep and south Karnataka over the next seven days.

IMD also cautioned regarding flooding across Tamil Nadu.

"A strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal due to a cyclonic circulation lies over north Bangladesh and neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level, Thunderstorm with lightning along with gusty wind speed activity very likely to continue over districts of West Bengal,” the IMD said.

“Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind at 40-50 kmph are likely to continue till Monday across Bengal,” the IMD statement read.

Rainfall is expected in northeastern states too. Thunderstorms, lightning, and&nbsp;squally&nbsp;winds (30-40 kmph) are&nbsp;expected&nbsp;from May 12 to 15, increasing&nbsp;to&nbsp;widespread rainfall from May 16th to 18th.

"This winter, fog and low-cloud coverage over the Indo-Gangetic plains started around Dec 24 in the western end covering Punjab and Haryana. North India records longest fog spell in a decade stretching for over a month now

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (Jan 19) issued a red alert for North India amidst intense cold wave and fog conditions. The IMD said intense cold wave conditions are likely to persist in North India for the next three days, while dense fog&nbsp;is expected in the region for the next five days.&nbsp;

The IMD said that “Jet Stream Winds” of the order of 130-140 knots at 12.6 km above mean sea level are prevailing over the plains of North India.

“It is leading to subsidence of cold air and enhancing cold wave/cold day conditions over North India. Similar intensity of Jet Stream is likely to continue during next 3-4 days,” said the weather forecast agency.

Night temperature&nbsp;is expected to stay between&nbsp;2-5 degrees Celsius in isolated pockets of north Rajasthan, and south Haryana, while in Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, remaining parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh it&nbsp;will remain in the range of 6-10 degrees.

“These are below normal by 2- 4 degree Celsius in isolated pockets of south Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan. Today, the lowest minimum temperature of 2.4 degree Celsius was reported at Bikaner (West Rajasthan) and Kanpur (East Uttar Pradesh),” said the IMD.

The weather department said any respite from cold waves and frigid temperatures is only expected after January 25. &nbsp;Moderate rainfall and snowfall is also expected over the Western Himalayan Region from January 25 to 31.

The IMD made it clear that no part of the country will experience cold waves after January 25.

Meanwhile, dense fog led to cancellations and delay of several flights at the Delhi international airport.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (Jan 19) issued a red alert for North India amidst intense cold wave and fog conditions. The IMD said intense cold wave conditions are likely to persist in North India for the next three days, while dense fog is expected in the region for the next five days.

Similar intensity of Jet Stream is likely to continue during next 3-4 days,” said the weather forecast agency. Night temperature is expected to stay between 2-5 degrees Celsius in isolated pockets of north Rajasthan, and south Haryana, while in Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, remaining parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh it will remain in the range of 6-10 degrees.
