The finance ministry notification said that on the recommendations of the Central Board of Directors "the central government hereby specifies the denomination of banknotes of the value of two hundred rupees".

The exercise is aimed at improving the currency situation in the country, PTI quoted sources as saying.

Ater demonetisation in November last year, the government came out with new Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 notes with additional security features.

The government has shown its inclination towards reducing reducing the quantity of higher denomination currency in circulation to check hoarding and generation of black money.

The Reserve Bank has also introduced a new Rs 50 note.
