Digi Yatra Foundation says it has control over app amid data security, facial recognition controversies
Digi Yatra roll out for domestic flights
Amid recent controversies, the Digi Yatra Foundation said that it has complete control over the Digi Yatra application, clarifying its stance on the involvement of a former vendor.
The Digi Yatra Foundation emphasised on Wednesday (April 17) that the Digi Yatra application has always remained under its full control, despite concerns regarding a former vendor, Dataevolve Solutions, which previously provided billing account and management services.
Responding to queries regarding Dataevolve Solutions' current association with Digi Yatra, the foundation categorically stated, "There is no association of Digi Yatra with Dataevolve," it said.
The foundation clarified that while Digi Yatra initially operated on the CIC infrastructure of Niti Ayog, it later migrated to Dataevolve. "Only the billing account and management was by Dataevolve," it added.
Addressing concerns about passenger data security, CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi told PTI in an interview, "It is only in the phone (of the user) that the data is residing and it is in the control of the passenger himself or herself."

Digi Yatra, powered by Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), facilitates contactless and seamless movement of passengers at airport checkpoints. Currently, the app boasts nearly 5 million users.
Access Now, a digital rights advocacy group, highlighted concerns regarding the use of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) in Digi Yatra and said, "It remains unclear how a programme involving the use of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) without restraint at India's airports is being run by a not-for-profit entity, which is actually controlled by five Indian airports, with the Airport Authority of India having only a minor stake of 26 per cent."
To avail of Digi Yatra services, passengers must register on the app using Aadhaar-based validation and a self-image capture. Subsequently, the boarding pass is scanned, and credentials are shared with the airport.
At the airport e-gate, passengers scan their bar-coded boarding pass, and the facial recognition system validates their identity and travel documents. Once verified, passengers can proceed through the e-gate, adhering to standard security protocols before boarding their flights.
As discussions surrounding data privacy and technology governance continue, the Digi Yatra Foundation remains committed to ensuring the security and efficiency of its services while addressing any concerns raised by stakeholders.
