Earlier the Women and Children Development minister Maneka Gandhi had asked her department to work on amending the POSCO law in order to introduce the provision of death penalty for the rape of a minor below the age of 12 years.

The present POSCO Act does not have the provision for the death penalty with the maximum sentence being life imprisonment.

The union minister's proposal came after the horrific murder of an eight-year-old in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua.

The court will hear the matter on April 27.
