The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday (August 26) reprimanded actress and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut for her comments connecting the farmers' protests in India to the unrest in Bangladesh.

This comes a day after the BJP MP from Mandi claimed that the farmers' protests could have triggered a crisis in India similar to the one in Bangladesh if not for the government's decisive actions.

In a video posted on her X account, Ranaut stated, "Bangladesh-like anarchy could have happened in India also like in the name of Farmers protest. Outside forces are planning to destroy us with the help of insiders. If it wouldn't have been the foresight of our leadership they would have succeeded."

The BJP said that Kangana Ranaut's "statement on farmers' protest is not the party's stand. The Bharatiya Janata Party disagrees with the remark made by Ms Kangana Ranaut. Neither Kangana Ranaut is permitted to speak on policy issues of the BJP, nor she is authorised to do so.”

“The BJP has directed Ms Kangana Ranaut to not issue such statements in the future. The Bharatiya Janata Party is committed towards social harmony as per the motto of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas Aur Sabka Prayaas,” BJP said in its statement.

Kangana Ranaut and farmers' protests: Past controversies

Advertisment

Kangana Ranaut has been a vocal opponent of the farmers' protests, which were directed against the repealed three farm laws.

In 2020, she wrongly identified a woman farmer from Punjab who was participating in the protests, calling her Bilkis Bano, a well-known figure from the anti-Citizenship Amendment Law (CAA) protests at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh.

Just days after being elected as an MP from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi, Ranaut was allegedly slapped by a CISF personnel at Chandigarh airport. The CISF constable had claimed that her mother was among the farmers protesting against the farm laws.
