The BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad asked Monday who is to be held responsible for the violence that broke out during the Bharat Bandh protest.
"Everyone has a right to protest but what is happening today? Petrol pumps and buses being set ablaze, putting to risk lives. Who is responsible?" asked Prasad.
The nationwide strike was called by the Congress over the recent rise in fuel prices, with the party saying some 20 parties were supporting the bandh.
wionews.com reported earlier on Monday that violence had broken out during the bandh.
Reports said Jan Adhikar Party workers had vandalised cars in Patna, Bihar that protesters in Gujarat's Bharuch had burnt tyres and stopped buses and that Congress workers had vandalised a petrol pump in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
Ravi Shankar Prasad also alluded to reports of a child dying in an ambulance after the vehicle got stuck in a protest in Bihar's Jehanabad but the reports were refuted by the SDO of Jehanabad.
"Bharat will not be bandh, it will keep moving and progressing," the BJP's Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Monday.
"No one is paying heed to this call by Congress. Their 'mahagatbandhan' balloon will also burst soon," he added.
Uttar Pradesh Chief MInister Yogi Adityanath meanwhile blamed the bandh on a "frustrated opposition".
"Frustrated opposition doesn't have any strategy and leadership, what else can be expected from them? I hope God gives them sense so they can differentiate between positive and negative, otherwise in future they will even lose their position as opposition," he said.
