Cinematographer Pratik Shah, known for his work on Homebound, has deactivated his Instagram account following a series of escalating allegations of abuse and inappropriate behaviour. The controversy gained momentum after filmmaker Abhinav Singh shared a post on Instagram that amplified the accusations against Shah.
Previous allegations resurface
Abhinav initially issued a warning on his Instagram account, urging his female friends to be cautious when dealing with Shah. He also invited anyone seeking more information to reach out to him via direct message.

Abhinav's post

According to a report by THR India, Shah had previously faced similar allegations four years ago. A young cinematographer reportedly filed a complaint with the Indian Women Cinematographers’ Collective (IWCC) after Shah allegedly solicited a nude photo from her. He apologised at the time, calling it a "one-off incident," and was let off with just a warning.
Multiple voices speak out
Following this revelation, Abhinav posted a follow-up message: “The number of women who’ve reached out to me is honestly frightening. I feel like I’m having a Margot Robbie moment from Bombshell. I will not be silenced. And to those who are still employing him – f**k you. His name is Pratik Shah. He’s a cinematographer.”

Abhinav's follow up post

“I’ve spoken out, and now I’m hearing from others — people who’ve felt silenced or sidelined. It’s heartbreaking. The patterns are undeniable. Many have called him a predator.” Filmmaker Srishti Riya Jain also shared her thoughts on Instagram, posting screengrabs of messages and statements alleging Shah's behaviour has been predatory for years. She highlighted claims from Reddit about Shah frequently messaging women unsolicited. “To everyone pretending to act shocked, scandalised, and suddenly awoken from their slumber… THIS man worked on one of the ‘most empathetic’ films of the year — or so the interviews at Cannes claimed,” she wrote.

James Gunn's Superman will be flying into theatres this July. The movie has a lot riding on it, both for DC Studios and its planned cinematic universe. But early box office projections for the film believe that it will have a strong opening weekend, expecting it to gross somewhere between $154–175 million from the US markets. Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, which is scheduled to release on June 5 across the country, will not be released in Karnataka. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), on Friday, announced its move objecting to the controversial remark made by the veteran star on the Kannada language. At the audio launch of Thug Life last week, Kamal Haasan said that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil', which caused widespread backlash with many demanding an apology from the actor.
Thug Life banned in Karnataka
According to an ANI report, Sa Ra Govindu, a representative of KFCC, told the media that they have decided to ban the film. The film body member also expressed their solidarity with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and other pro-Kannada organisations for their demands. Earlier, the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike filed a complaint against Kamal Haasan for hurting the sentiments of Kannadigas with his statement. Following the complaint, the film chamber gave the actor 24 hours to apologise and announced that the film would be banned if he failed to tender an apology. Govindu told the media, "When there is pressure, I have to do. Even Karnataka Rakshana Vedike were present; whatever they say, we should do it. Even they would speak about it. Definitely, there is no 'Sorry' term being specified anywhere by Kamal Haasan. We will surely not release the film. We (KFCC) will stand with Rakshana Vedike and other Kannada organisations."
‘I will not apologise’
On Friday, Kamal Haasan reacted to the controversy, stating that he won’t apologise for his remarks."I've been threatened before. This is my lifestyle, please don't tamper with it." The controversy began a day after the actor was named as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha by DMK. The party allocated one out of its four seats in the Upper House to Haasan’s political party, Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM).
‘Said out of love’
Earlier this week, Haasan said that his remarks were made out of love and insisted that "love will never apologise." Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Haasan said those creating controversy over his statements were "confusing the issue." He added, "What I said, was said out of love. And a lot of historians have taught me language history and I did not mean anything." He further described Tamil Nadu as a "rare state" that has always been welcoming to people from various backgrounds. "And, let me tell you, Tamil Nadu is a place which has been open. I don't say there is no other state like this. But a very rare state where a Menon (MG Ramachandran) has been our Chief Minister...a Reddy (Omandur Ramasamy Reddiyar) has been our chief minister, a Tamil (M Karunanidhi) has been our chief minister and then a Kannadiga Iyengar has been our CM, from Mandya," the actor said, apparently referring to the late Jayalalithaa as the Kannadiga Iyengar.
What is the controversy about?
Kamal Haasan and his movie Thug Life sparked controversy in Karnataka after he reportedly said that "Kannada is born out of Tamil" at a Chennai event. This led to protests outside the INOX cinema hall in Belagavi, Karnataka, organised by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike group, which expressed anger and demanded an apology from the actor. The ruling Congress party stated that Haasan was unaware of the greatness of Kannada, while the BJP demanded an apology from the actor-politician and accused him of ‘disrespecting’ the language. On Wednesday, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah criticised Kamal Haasan’s remarks, saying he was unaware of the “long-standing” history of the Kannada language. “Kannada has a long-standing history. Poor Kamal Haasan, he is unaware of it,” Siddaramaiah said. Pro-Kannada groups strongly opposed Haasan’s comment, leading to a police complaint against him. The groups have also demanded a complete ban on Thug Life release in Karnataka. Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life releases in theatres on June 5.

Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, which is scheduled to release on June 5 across the country, will not be released in Karnataka.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Friday said he will not apologise for the remarks he made over the Kannada language. Haasan has been facing a lot of backlash over his remark that “Kannada is born out of Tamil” during an audio launch event of his latest film Thug Life in Chennai last week. Haasan’s remark drew criticism from Karnataka politicians and many demanded an apology from the actor. However, on Friday, Kamal Haasan said he would only apologise if he was wrong.
‘It is a democracy’
Several pro-Kannada groups have threatened to boycott his film and demanded an apology for his comment on the Kannada language. Responding to their demands, Kamal Haasan said, “It is a democracy. I believe in the law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't.”The controversy began a day after the actor was named as the candidate for Rajya Sabha by DMK. The party allocated one out of its four seats in the Upper House to Haasan’s political part,y Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM).
‘It is a democracy’ Several pro-Kannada groups have threatened to boycott his film and demanded an apology for his comment on the Kannada language. Responding to their demands, Kamal Haasan said, “It is a democracy. I believe in the law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't.” The controversy began a day after the actor was named as the candidate for Rajya Sabha by DMK. The party allocated one out of its four seats in the Upper House to Haasan’s political part,y Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM). ‘Said out of love’ Earlier this week, Haasan said that his remarks were made out of love and insisted that "love will never apologise." Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Haasan said those creating controversy over his statements were "confusing the issue." He added, "What I said, was said out of love. And a lot of historians have taught me language history and I did not mean anything." One of the most anticipated movies of the year is the upcoming sports drama F1. The movie stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a washed-up Formula One driver who gets a second chance at a comeback. F1 used a lot of practical effects to film intense and often dangerous racing scenes. Joseph Kosinski, who helmed Tom Cruise's blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick, is directing the project and was recently asked why he picked Brad Pitt over Tom Cruise, considering the movie's heavy reliance on dangerous stunts, something Cruise excels in.
Kosinski opens up about the casting choice
In an interview with Variety, Kosinski revealed why he picked Pitt over Cruise: "They both have the natural talent for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more." He continued, "Tom pushes it to the limit. I mean, really to the limit. That terrifies me. I mean, I’ve done loads of Mission: Impossible with Tom, and it’s the most stressful experience for someone like me, building cars for him, doing stunts with him. Whereas Brad listens and he knows his abilities, and I think he’d be the first to say, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to do that.’"
Cruise revs up his own racing plans
While the director had a very practical reason for his choice, it does seem that it has had the opposite effect on Tom Cruise, who is said to be planning a sequel to his 1990 hit Days of Thunder, where he played Cole Trickle, a young NASCAR driver trying to prove himself. But before Cruise hits the race track, he will be reuniting with Joseph Kosinski for the third instalment of Top Gun. As for F1, the movie has a reported budget of $300 million and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Javier Bardem, Kim Bodnia, Shea Whigham, and Joseph Balderrama. I discovered myself in the jingle industry. He has seen my growth. When I was based in Chennai, he was there. When I was doing Bombay Dreams, he used to come to London for music. He didn't come to Bollywood, though. When I'm doing my virtual reality stuff, he's seen it and commented on it." He went on to add, “Our relationship is to serve the audience and the cinema. That is our common purpose. That common purpose drives us to excel. In fact, the final mixing of Thug Life was happening day before yesterday. And he asked me if we could make the music a little aggressive in a particular scene. I went to the studio, and we changed it one hour before the engineer left the studio. That's the freedom we have.” Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam reunite after 37 years The Thug Life album, which was released recently, has been a major success. The album consists of nine songs. Speaking of the iconic duo, the movie also marks Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam reuniting after nearly four decades. They last worked together in the 1987 crime drama Nayakan. The film boasts an ensemble star cast that includes Silambarasan STR, Trisha Krishnan, Sanya Malhotra, Pankaj Tripathi, and Ali Fazal. The script for the film was co-written by Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. Thug Life will be released in all major Indian languages and hit theatres worldwide on June 5, 2025.

Indian artists Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, sons of sarod virtuoso Ustad Amjad Ali Khan are passionate about their music, the message behind it and how they continuously reinvent their presentation style. No strangers to fame, the sibling duo, busy with their world tour, spoke about the influence of music on their lives and taking forward the legacy built by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. In an exclusive chat, Ayaan Ali Bangash spoke about sharing the stage with father-legendary sarod player Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, what it was like growing up in a house full of music and whether his kids plan to take up music as a profession. Here are the edited excerpts of our chat: Q: You and Amaan have a world tour planned for the summer. What can you tell us about that? A: We started a spring tour in April. Through April and May, we are performing in the United States. We also have concerts in Europe. We have a lot of concerts where we will also perform with my father, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan Sahab. We always try to reinvent our style and change the way we present our music. It’s amazing to be able to do spend so much time together as a family when we are touring. In addition to that, we have some interesting projects which we are currently working on. Those should be out soon. We recently performed with the Google Orchestra. Google, I think, is one of the few companies that has their own musical orchestra, which I was very impressed with. It was called the Google Orchestra. So they played my father's concerts. There are some concerts with Sharon the guitarist, whom we collaborate with a lot. These will all be in the US.
Working with legendary Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
Q: How does it feel like working with your father Ustad Amjad Ali Khan? Has anything changed in the way you both perform with him now vs when you started. Is he stricter or easier to work with now? A: I think the relationship has become more of a guru and student now over the years. What can I say? I'm just so blessed to even sit alongside the stage with him. You know how they say that you remain a student till your last day? My father feels he's still learning, he's still reinventing himself. That way we are yet to be delivered, I think. So it's a very long journey. I would like to add that all your life experiences reflects onto your music. So what I was playing 20 years ago or 10 years ago – it’s not the same today. When crafting music, you incorporate all those experiences and continue on your journey without diluting tradition. I believe that in order to be contemporary, you don't have to murder tradition. So in my opinion, things can exist beautifully. My brother and I continue with our contemporary collaborations but our soul is classical music. Q: Does it ever get intimidating working with your father? A: You see, when your Guru is your father, then it's a dual relationship you’re dealing with. There are moments when he suddenly turns into the Guru and it's a very seamless transition. But we have been able to manage it well. Luckily, he still hasn't thrown us out of his life. We are just carrying forward on the journey that he took many years ago and we're just trying to flow along those along the river.
Music: First choice?
Q: Was music your first choice of profession? A: The atmosphere at home was so musically charged, that the language spoken was music and the air we were breathing had music in it. Even if my father was travelling, we had students who were constantly in the music room. So we automatically picked up the sarod and were playing. We grw up with sarods. Music has been the greatest wealth we've had in our family. So I don't think it was something outside the box to teach it. Like I have twins today who are 12. I didn't realize until recently that they'll eventually be sitting on stage with us. It was never planned in such a way and they have their academic commitments, their PS five commitments and yet I see them sit down to practice and pick up the instrument. Q: Have your kids told you what they want to become and if they will choose music like you did? A: My kids are 12 and they have already picked it up. We do concerts, which are called the Sarod Quintet, where it's my father, my brother, myself and Zohan and Abir performing. So we've done a lot of shows in India. In fact, we will be touring around India's Independence Day in August as well later. They also performed in Wigmore Hall with us in London. They played in Symphony Space in New York. They are just trying it out and seeking blessings at this point of time. Eventually in the future if they want to do this, they will but right now, I think they're enjoying the process. They love the Q&A sessions their grandfather has with them on stage.
