Mani Ratnam’s latest film Thug Life, featuring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan, released across India on June 5, except in Karnataka. The film was banned in the state owing to Kamal Haasan’s controversial remark stating, ‘Karnataka was born out of Tamil.’ As the actor refused to apologise for his statement, saying it was said out of love, local film bodies in Karnataka called for a statewide ban on the film’s release. But according to reports, the ban will lead to an estimated Rs 35-40 crore (Rs 350 million -400 million) loss for the film. Thug Life is co-produced by Haasan and Ratnam’s Madras Talkies. How much will the Karnataka ban cost Thug Life? Producer and distributor G Dhananjayan spoke to The Hindu and said that the production of Thug Life will likely lose Rs35-40 crore gross at the box office and Rs12-15 crore (Rs 120 million – 150 million) share to producers due to the missed release in Karnataka. This calculation was based on how Pushpa 2, Baahubali 2, RRR, and Kalki 2898 AD made in Karnataka alone. He said, “With the four Telugu films grossing a total of ₹5832 crore (Rs 58 billion), the Karnataka box office revenue alone amounts to ₹391.20 crore (Rs 3.9 billion) while the north Indian market accounts for ₹2361.60 crore (Rs 23 billion). The Karnataka market accounts for around 7% of the total revenue.” Top-grossing Tamil films like Jailer, Leo, Ponniyin Selvan, The GOAT, and Vikram had a major chunk of the market in Karnataka, said the producer, adding, “For Tamil films too, the Karnataka market accounts for 7% of the total revenue. About the language row On 27 May, while promoting Thug Life and calling Kannada film star Shiva Rajkumar his family, Kamal said, “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” sparking uproar. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce threatened to ban the film's release in the state subsequently but the actor refused to apologise and claimed his statement was being misconstrued. He moved the Karnataka High Court to help with the release, but the court reprimanded the actor and stated that the issue could be solved with a ‘simple apology’ while criticising the actor for not being a linguist or historian. Meanwhile, the Tamil Active Film Producers Council has stated that Karnataka stopping or postponing Thug Life’s release will damage the relationship between the two film industries and will have consequences. WION’s review of Thug Life Shomini Sen of WION called the film the ‘most commercial outing’ of Mani Ratnam’s. “Thug Life is not a bad film, per se. However, it’s a film that reunites two legends of Indian cinema, so one would hope for something extraordinary, given their past work. Thug Life’s no show in Karnataka could lead to loss of Rs 350 million, feel trade experts

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam- two stalwarts coming together in a film is a cinematic event in itself. The highly anticipated film Thug Life, which marks the collaboration of the two legends after 37 years, is finally here.

Expectations, thus, were high for this one from the time the film was announced. But Haasan, who also serves as a co-writer and co-producer of the film, delivers a middling performance in a formulaic film that is spruced with well-known actors, both from the south as well as the north. Ratnam, who is considered one of the best auteurs in the country, always has managed to make warm, emotional, and gritty dramas. Each of his movies has the distinct mark of the filmmaker, which is hard to emulate. Thug Life, however , seems to be more of a massy drama which doesn’t particularly have any distinct stamp of the filmmaker.

Plot of Thug Life

Two brothers, Shakti (Haasan) and Manikyam (Nassar) run a mafia network in New Delhi. During a shootout with the police, Shakti rescues a little boy, Amar, whose father dies during crossfire. Haasan plays a man, who holds his loved ones close and is ruthless to his enemies, delivering a convincing act. It isn’t Haasan’s best performance but credit should be given to the man for still being so agile and relevant at 70. The scene stealer, however, is STR, who delivers a strong performance as Amar- a loyal aide to Sakti but who feels he has been betrayed by his mentor.

Ratnam’s frequent collaborator Ravi K Chandran shoots the film beautifully, and some of the panoramic shots are stunning.

What does not

The film is terribly formulaic. At a time when Hindi films are relying heavily on south-inspired action thrillers, one had hoped Ratnam and Haasan would be able to change the narrative. But Thug Life sticks to the usual tropes of action films, where the lead protagonist is presented as larger than life. Haasan’s character is shot at, thrown off a cliff, and even gets caught in the middle of an avalanche, yet he survives. Haasan’s Shakti defies death so much that it would put regular superheroes to shame. At one point, a huge concrete slab falls on Haasan, yet, in the next moment, he is up fighting a man double his size. Nothing can beat him.

There are continuity issues, too. Simbu, dressed in white pants and a blue shirt, is shown tied on a dusty floor. But as he escapes, not a strand is out of his carefully made man bun, nor are there any creases on his clothes or a spec of dust. Unbelievable.

These flaws could be overlooked, if the plot was more solid. Almost at the beginning of the second half, you know how the film will pan out. The plot truly is wafer-thin, which only wants to make Haasan look like a superhero. As a result, a lot of the actors are wasted. Abhirami holds her own as Jeeva, Shakti’s wife. Trisha is wasted, so are Ali Fazal and Mahesh Manjrekar, who only have two scenes in total. Even STR fades away in the middle of the second half, only to reappear near the climax.

The women in Mani Ratnam's films are usually so well presented and often play an integral part of the story. They are usually strong individuals. However, in Thug Life, they are all shown to be dependent on the men. Be the mistress, who moves from one man to another's house and has no identity of herself, the wife who rallies around the husband and only worries of his well being, to the daughter who needs consent of the father, or the ex wife who needs father-in-law to get a divorce from the husband. The women are never on their own.

Final verdict

Thug Life is not a bad film, per se.
James Gunn opens up about Krypto

Director James Gunn has mentioned in interviews that while Krypto is lovable, he isn't exactly easy to handle, saying: “You love him because he's a dog, and how can you not? And he's got the cute, innocent eyes, but he's a terrible dog.”

While we don't know exactly when we will get to see Krypto's animated adventures, we do know that his next big screen appearance, after Superman, will be in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is currently in production. He will be no doubt helping Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) on her adventures.

Superman to launch the new DC Universe

Meanwhile, Superman is directed by James Gunn and will be the first entry in the DC Cinematic Universe. It stars David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The film will focus on Clark Kent’s first year as a superhero in Metropolis. Additionally, it will introduce several other DC heroes, including Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Mister Terrific, laying the groundwork for future DCU projects.

The supporting cast of Superman includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela De Faría, Wendell Pierce, and Alan Tudyk.

Superman is set to premiere worldwide on 11 July 2025.

Edmund White, the influential American novelist who chronicled gay life through his semi-autobiographical work, including dozens of books, several short stories and countless articles and essays, has died, his agent said Wednesday. He was 85. "Ed passed last night at home in NYC (New York City) of natural causes," agent Bill Clegg told AFP, adding White is survived by his husband Michael Carroll and a sister. From his earliest publications, homosexuality was at the heart of his writing -- from the 1950s, when being gay was considered a mental illness, to the sexual liberation after the Stonewall riots in 1969, which he witnessed firsthand. Then came the AIDS years that decimated an entire generation. White himself would be affected directly -- he was diagnosed HIV positive in 1985 and lived with the condition for four decades. Tributes to the award-winning writer began pouring in on social media, including from his longtime friend and fellow prolific American author Joyce Carol Oates. "There has been no one like Edmund White!" Oates posted on X. "Astonishing stylistic versatility, boldly pioneering subject matter; darkly funny; a friend to so many over decades." Fellow author and playwright Paul Rudnick said on X that White was a "gay icon" whose novels, memoirs and non-fiction "changed and enhanced American literature." White was an avid traveler, spending years researching biographies of French authors Jean Genet and Marcel Proust. In the 1970s he co-wrote "The Joy of Gay Sex," a how-to guide and resource on relationships, which was a queer counter to "The Joy of Sex," the hugely popular 1972 illustrated sex manual. In the 2010s White suffered two strokes and a heart attack. But he kept writing. In this year's "The Loves of My Life," he recalled all the men he had loved -- White numbered his sexual partners at some 3,000. The New York Times described the book as "gaspingly graphic, jaunty and tender." White himself acknowledged that literature was a powerful conduit for revealing the intimate sides of ourselves. "The most important things in our intimate lives can't be discussed with strangers, except in books," as he once wrote.

At a time when 'Pan-India' movies with larger-than-life action heroes in the lead are ruling the box office, debutant director Karan Tejpal's film Stolen seems like an unusual thriller. It has two brothers helping a woman they have just met, find her missing baby, amid the sand dunes and by lanes of Rajasthan, as locals, cops, and thugs chase them and try to blame them for a crime they have not committed. The film, all of 90 minutes, is one of the slickest and edgy thrillers that Indian cinema has produced in recent years. There is not a single dull moment in this film, and an excellent screenplay backed by great performances by the three leads- makes Stolen a must-watch.

Plot of Stolen

What starts off as two separate incidents in a lonely railway station somewhere in north India, soon becomes a story of chase through the hinterlands. A sleepy Gautam awaits in his swanky SUV for his younger brother Raman’s arrival outside a railway station. In the same railway station, Jhumpa Mahto is sleeping with her five-month-old baby, who is kidnapped by a woman. Raman happens to briefly cross paths with the kidnapper at the station. As Jhumpa wakes up, realizes, and cries out looking for her lost baby, commotion ensues. Police get involved, Raman says he may have seen the kidnapper, even as Gautam tries to take his brother away from the commotion. The brothers somehow get involved in the case, first with the police wanting to interrogate Raman as the prime witness and later because of their own moral obligation to help the impoverished woman find her baby.

What follows is a chase through ravines and sand dunes and narrow alleys of villages within Rajasthan and old, abandoned havelis as Raman and Gautam realize that there is more to the case than just a missing baby. What begins as a mere search for Jhumpa’s lost baby slowly turns into a night that changes the perspectives of the two brothers on life and the system at large.

What works

The last time I was on the edge of my seat watching a survival story like this was back in 2015 when Navdeep Singh’s NH10 was released. Stolen, has the same framework, and keeps you hooked and even slightly anxious through the 90 minutes of its runtime. The film’s taught screenplay by Gaurav Dhingra, Swapnil Salkar-Agadbumb and Tejpal is backed by super performances by actors Abhishek Banerjee, Shubham Vardhan, and Mia Maelzer. Banerjee’s reluctant man stuck in an unprecedented situation owing to his brother's ac,t comes out convincingly. Banerjee has come of his own, from his days as the mentor in The Pitchers to now stealing the thunder from terrific performers in Stree 2, it has been quite a journey for this casting agent. The actor is very assured as Gautam- a man who in the course of a night realizes that the expensive watch he wears and SUV he drives are just a hogwash in the larger scheme of things, that his privilege can be an agent of catalyst for change for some one who needs help and is impoverished.

Shubham Vardhan, as the wide-eyed, empathetic Raman, is also a scene-stealer. He knows he has the privilege to help and acts as a catalyst in changing Gautam’s perspective. Vardhan and Banerjee share great onscreen chemistry , which alleviates the narrative. Giving them company is Mia Maelzer, who sinks her teeth into the character of a helpless woman, fighting the odds and a language barrier as she tries to find her baby. Her act is raw, earnest, and very much in tune with the narrative.

Stolen works on so many levels. Not only does the film keep you hooked from its first frame till the last thanks to solid writing by Karan Tejpal, Gaurav Dhingra, and Swapnil Salkar, it also makes you think of the privileges you are born with, it makes you wonder about the what ifs in life, and so much more, but the narrative never becomes a jargon or sermon on issues. The message is delivered amid a lot of chase and hide and seek ,but effectively.

What does not

Only a few flaws in between an overall solid script. One can’t help but wonder how Gautam can speak Bengali when it isn’t his mother tongue. Also, the two brothers go missing a night before a big family wedding, and nothing is shown on whether the family starts looking for them when they don’t come home. The flaws, however, can be overlooked because of the urgency with which the story unfolds, making it an edgy, slick survival thriller.

Stolen has been lauded at various film festivals before its India release, and the film, devoid of any songs or big A-listers, stands out as one of the best thrillers of the year.

Don’t miss at any cost. Stolen is streaming on Prime Video.

I'm highlighting the word early. Cancer sucks in any form but I'm holding onto the word early. I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period. I just wanted to be open and share it.
