Reiner was arrested on Sunday after the bodies of his 78-year-old filmmaker father and mother, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were discovered at their home in the upmarket Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner made his first appearance in court Wednesday, charged with stabbing his parents to death in their Los Angeles home. In a very brief hearing thronged by media, Nick Reiner did not enter a plea to two counts of first-degree murder over a crime that has shocked the entertainment world. The 32-year-old, who has a troubled history of addiction, is next expected to appear in court on January 7 for a formal arraignment. Lawyer Alan Jackson told reporters the case needed to be treated with "restraint and with dignity." "This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family," he said. "There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. These need to be thoroughly but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed." Jackson has so far refused to say who hired him. If convicted, Reiner could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty, although California does not routinely carry out capital punishment. Reiner was arrested on Sunday after the bodies of his 78-year-old filmmaker father and mother, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were discovered at their home in the upmarket Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Prosecutors said Rob Reiner -- who directed huge hits including "When Harry Met Sally" and "A Few Good Men" -- and his wife were stabbed to death. - Timeline - On Wednesday, a picture began to emerge of the timeline of a weekend that has left Hollywood in shock. According to US media reports, Nick Reiner, who lived in a guest property at his parents' home, had attended a glitzy Hollywood party hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien on Saturday, where some attendees spoke of his behaving erratically. The New York Times, citing a source close to the family, said the couple had been due to dine with former president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle on Sunday evening, and had seemingly booked a massage appointment for that day. The paper said a therapist who arrived at the house had been unable to get an answer, so had contacted the couple's daughter, Romy Reiner. When she arrived with a friend, she discovered her father's body, and emergency services were called. Paramedics told her that her mother's body was also at the property. Entertainment outlet TMZ reported that Nick Reiner had checked in to a Santa Monica hotel early Sunday morning. At a press conference on Tuesday, investigators declined to say what time they believed the couple had died. Police arrested Reiner several miles (kilometers) away from the scene of the crime late on Sunday evening. - 'Devastating' - In a statement issued Wednesday, Jake and Romy Reiner said the death of their parents was "horrific and devastating." "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," the statement said. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. "We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave." Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, started his showbiz career in acting. He won fame as the oafish son-in-law Michael "Meathead" Stivic on groundbreaking 1970s sitcom "All in the Family," before transitioning to directing. Even while leading behind the camera, he often appeared in cameo roles in his own films. As a director, he struck Hollywood gold. His output included classic films like 1984's rock music mockumentary "This is Spinal Tap," fantasy gem "The Princess Bride" from 1987, and seminal coming-of-age movie "Stand By Me." "A Few Good Men," starring Hollywood heavyweights Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

It is a proud moment for India as Neeraj Ghaywan’s film Homebound, featuring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, has made it to the shortlist of the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards. The film is India’s official entry at the Oscars 2026 and is now in the top 15 contending to be nominated in the Best International Feature category. The film is the fifth Indian film to make it to the shortlist, which itself calls for celebration. But what does it mean to be on the Oscar shortlist? And does it mean that the film has now secured a nomination at the Oscars 2026? Here’s what it means.

Homebound makes it to Oscar shortlist: What does it mean?

The film, which premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, has made it to the Oscar 2026 shortlist in the Best International Feature category. Now, qualifying for the shortlist is in itself a big achievement, considering over 80 films were competing in this category.

While in other categories, only the Academy members relevant to that category are eligible to vote, the case is different for the Best International Feature category.

For instance, only documentary filmmakers are eligible to vote in the best documentary categories. But in the International Feature category, an Academy member has to watch all other contenders and then opt in to vote in the category. The competition is also quite huge and diverse, given that India’s official Oscars entry competed with each country’s official entry.

It should be noted that Homebound has found a spot among films like Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident (France) and Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice (South Korea).

What’s next?

Homebound is now part of the top 15. From here, it’s an uphill road for the film and its team which will have to campaign hard in order to make members of the Academy watch the film in order to secure more votes and thus make it to the top 5 nominations in the Best International Feature category.

Homebound will face competition in Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident (France), Park Chan-Wook’s No Other Choice (South Korea), and Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value (Norway) in the category.

It should be noted that India has never won an Oscar in the Best International Feature category. The last nomination from India in this category was Lagaan back in 2002, which lost to the Bosnian film No Man’s Land.

Only 4 Indian films made it to the shortlist

Before Homebound, only four Indian films have made it to the shortlist so far. As per the official website of the Film Federation of India, three of them also made it to the final Best International Feature category (then known as Best Foreign Film category), but didn’t win the Oscar. The films include Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957), which was also the first time India sent its official entry to the 30th Academy Awards.

30 years later, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! (1988) also made it to the nomination list, and 14 years later, Lagaan (2001) made it to the final category.

The only time an official entry from India has made it to the shortlist, but not to the main category, is Pan Nalin’s 2021 Gujarati film, The Last Film Show.

India's history at Oscars

Producer of Homebound Karan Johar took to Instagram to share his excitement over the film’s selection in the Oscar shortlist.

“I am not sure I can articulate how proud, elated and over the moon I am with the journey of #HOMEBOUND… all of us @dharmamovies are privileged to have this proud and important film in our filmography,” he wrote, adding, “From Cannes to being on the Oscar shortlist this has been such an overwhelming journey!” Ghaywan also shared the news on his social media handles, writing, “We’re deeply grateful for the extraordinary love and support we’ve received from around the world.”

Interestingly, while India is the world’s largest producer of films, only 10 Indians have won an Oscar so far, including an honorary Oscar for the late filmmaker Satyajit Ray in 1992.

Many would also recall that SS Rajamouli’s 2022 Telugu blockbuster, RRR, won the Best Original Song Oscar for the hit song ‘Natu Natu’.

The 2026 Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026.

Neeraj Ghaywan's directorial Homebound has made it to the Oscar shortlist in the Best International Feature category. The fim features Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa in lead roles. Here's what it means to be selected in the Oscars shortlist.

Only 4 Indian films made it to the shortlist Before Homebound, only four Indian films have made it to the shortlist so far. India's history at Oscars Producer of Homebound Karan Johar took to Instagram to share his excitement over the film’s selection in the Oscar shortlist.

According to insiders, the 32-year-old’s alleged descent into violence wasn't sudden; it was a years-long pattern of "meth-fueled benders" that turned the family’s Brentwood guest house into a zone of chaos. Here is a breakdown of the drug and the destruction it allegedly caused in the Reiner home.

On Apple Music India, Dhurandhar has secured the #1 album position, with tracks from the soundtrack simultaneously dominating individual song charts. The performance highlights a rare convergence of album listening and song-level discovery across platforms.

With Dhurandhar, Shashwat Sachdev delivers a soundtrack that functions at scale — spanning cinematic score-driven compositions, contemporary hip-hop-influenced tracks, and emotionally led songs — while operating as a cohesive musical body. The wide chart spread reflects the album’s sonic range and its ability to connect with diverse audiences.

Reacting to the achievement, the composer, super producer Shashwat Sachdev states, “I never imagined this album as a chase for numbers. Dhurandhar was made slowly, with trust, friendship, and a lot of love for the music itself. To see all eleven tracks finding a place on the charts and a few of them living at the very top is deeply humbling. This belongs to every artist, musician, engineer, and collaborator who gave a piece of their soul to these songs. I’m grateful beyond words, and I’m just happy the music found its people.”

Also read: Dhurandhar movie review: Aditya Dhar delivers a big-screen experience we needed, powered by Ranveer Singh & Akshaye Khanna

This success follows Sachdev’s recent work on The Ba****ds of Bollywood and further strengthens his position as one of the few Indian composers whose film music consistently translates into global streaming performance, marking Dhurandhar as a defining milestone for Bollywood music on the world stage.
