Serena Williams recently revealed a secret about her daughter that Swifties will love! In a candid conversation at HubSpot's INBOUND conference in Boston on Thursday, Williams spoke with host and editor Kara Swisher about her journey into venture capital and her experiences as a mother of two young daughters.
The retired tennis icon, who shares Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. and Adira River Ohanian with her husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, revealed that her eldest daughter is a huge Taylor Swift fan and she chooses the singer over princesses and fairies.
“Olympia just turned 7, and she’s not into princesses. She’s into Taylor Swift,” Williams shared, laughing. “I am, too.”
The conversation soon turned to the challenges of raising children in an increasingly digital world. Williams admitted that parenting today comes with its unique set of concerns.
“It’s a scary world. It’s a digital world for kids right now,” Williams said. “I’m always on with my daughter, but we don’t allow her on certain platforms.”
“It's so interesting that with everything available online and the access that kids have — in a second, you never know what can come to them,” the Olympic gold medalist added. “Like I said, I'm trying to think positively. I feel like we might try to take it slow with her and go a little bit slower with electronics, and just let her be a kid for as long as you can.”
Despite being a global superstar, Williams approaches parenting with humility, admitting that she is always open to learning new things. “Please give me [parenting tips], thank you very much!” she joked, before admitting, “I don’t have any [advice]. Wake up, that’s all I do. I could barely wake up today!”
She also shared her philosophy on what it means to be a champion in life. “You don’t have to be winning Wimbledon or a gold medal to be a champion. Being a champion is really just being there for your kids. I think that’s a huge champion,” she added.
