Bolywood actor Prateik Babbar made a heartfelt style statement at the Mumbai screening of his late mother Smita Patil’s iconic film, Manthan. Babbar donned a bespoke suit crafted from his mother's treasured Kanjeevaram sarees, creating a poignant blend of fashion and family legacy.

The unique outfit was designed by Rahul Vijay, who shared the creation process on Instagram.Vijay expressed gratitude to Prateik for allowing him to transform Smita Patil's cherished sarees into a modern masterpiece.

“Thank you @_prat for letting me dig into the archives of your late mother, and the very iconic #SmitaPatil," Rahul wrote. He detailed how Prateik's request to design an outfit for the Indian premiere of Manthan inspired the innovative use of Smita's sarees.

Vijay faced a unique challenge: converting women's wear into a style that resonated with Prateik’s modern aesthetic. Prateik’s aunt helped select two silk Kanjeevaram sarees, preserved over the years. Collaborating with Monica Shah of Jade by MK, Vijay crafted a cropped double-breasted tuxedo in plain black silk and transformed the pinstriped saree into wide-legged pants. The red border of the second saree was used as trim on the sleeves, adding a touch of elegance.

“We wanted to keep the silhouette very modern considering we were recycling Indian sarees," Vijay explained. The result was a harmonious fusion of Indian textiles and contemporary design, epitomising sustainable fashion with a deep emotional connection.

Prateik’s girlfriend, actress Priya Banerjee, also paid tribute to the late actress by wearing one of her sarees and jewellery. On Instagram, she expressed her gratitude for the honour, sharing the moving history of the Tanchoi saree Smita Patil wore to solicit donations for the Nargis Dutt Cancer Foundation in the USA.

The restored version of Shyam Benegal’s landmark film Manthan was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival under the Cannes Classics segment.

The Cannes screening drew notable attendees including Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, Dr. Kurien's daughter Nirmala Kurien, and Amul MD Jayen Mehta, alongside Prateik Babbar.

The screening also saw the presence of Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, which was instrumental in the restoration of the film.
