'Hardest year of my life' says Prince William on both wife and father's cancer diagnosis

This year has been difficult for the UK royals. First Catherine and then King Charles had to undergo cancer treatment.

Prince William, while reflecting on the year that has gone by, said that 2024 has been “brutal” and “probably the hardest year in my life” as he dealt with his wife and father having cancer. William spoke in a video interview to mark the end of his week-long visit to Cape Town in South Africa for the Earthshot prize awards ceremony.

When asked how the year has been so far, William said, “Honestly, it’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life. Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult. But I’m so proud of my wife, and I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”

Both the cancer diagnosis announcements came one after another. The Buckingham Palace announced that William’s father, King Charles, had cancer in February. In March, William’s wife, the Princess of Wales, disclosed she’s going through cancer treatment too.

Princess Kate received chemotherapy

Princess Kate (Catherine) returned to her duties in September. She appeared in a video with her family to confirm her return to public duties. She revealed that she’s gone through chemotherapy and is feeling much better. She said at the time that she wanted to focus on “doing what I can to stay cancer-free”.

King Charles is still recovering

Meanwhile, King Charles has been receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of the disease as an outpatient. He hasn’t taken up any public duties for now.
