Directed by Rao, the movie is based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. Set in a fictitious state called Nirmal Pradesh in 2001, the movie revolves around Dinesh Kumar, a young boy whose bride Phool Kumari gets lost and mistakenly he has brought someone else's bride Pushpa to his home. A police officer, Kishan, takes the case of finding Phool and find home of another mysterious bride Pushpa.
Young actors Pratibha Ratna, Sparsh Shrivastav, and Nitanshi Goel who play the lead roles have given exceptional performances in the movie. Ravi Kishan as a cop and Chhaya Kadam as Manju Maai have given a brilliant performance.
In her review, WION's Shomini Sen called the film a 'giant warm hug'. "The beauty of Laapataa Ladies is that even though the film is feminist in its approach it never makes the men look bad nor does it whitewash them. Rao creates a stunning world where everyone and everything is nirmal (gentle) much like the film’s treatment and the place it's set in," wrote Sen in her review.
The film is produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Kiran Rao's Kindling Productions.
