Following reports that the BCCI is mulling starting IPL 2027 earlier to beat the harsh summer heat, the board’s secretary, Devajit Saikia, also confirmed that there are no plans to expand the number of league games from 74 to 94 each season anytime soon due to a packed international calendar. Since increasing the number of teams from eight to 10 in 2022, the BCCI has planned to expand its window and, with that, the number of matches. As things stand, each IPL team faces a set of opponents twice and others just once under the current setup, but they had planned to introduce a full-scale round-robin format during 94 matches per season. IPL fame and India-A opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was involved in an ugly spat with a Sri Lanka A player, Vishen Halambage, involving physical touch, after the hosts won the thrilling contest via a super over in Dambulla on Monday (Jun 15). Shortly after Sri Lanka A defended 17 off the super over, tensions arose between the two players, with Niroshan Dickwella intervening to defuse it. Blurry visuals in fading light showed Sooryavanshi and Halambage going at each other, and Dickwella separating the two. India’s batting prodigy walked back in anger, making hand gestures and expressing his frustration at being unable to help his team win the match. After the game was tied at the end of 50 overs, with Sri Lanka A scoring 265 for nine, the same as Team India’s first-inning total, a super over was needed to determine the winner. Per the rules, the hosts batted first and clobbered 16 runs in six deliveries. With Vaibhav and Suryansh Shedge, India-A fancied their chances, only to lose the game by seven runs, their second loss in three contested matches. WATCH VIDEO -

Meanwhile, the final hour of play was filled with drama. With Sri Lanka A needing just five to win with two wickets remaining, India-A left-arm quick Arshad Khan conceded only four runs, resulting in a tie. However, with the light fading away, the two on-field umpires seemed reluctant to take the super over. Given that the cut-off time was 5:30 PM local time, the officials had the option to extend play until they deemed natural light was enough for the action. Also read | ‘Wanted to give up cricket’: Shreyanka Patil reveals struggle with depression Later, India-A captain Tilak Varma was involved in a long chat with the umpires, pushing them to take the super over, which eventually happened after Sri Lanka A also agreed to it. Not only this, but the super over also had plenty of action besides cricketing shots and boundaries. Arshad, bowling the super over, bowled a high full-toss to Avishka Fernando, who failed to clear the infield and was rather caught, only for the third umpire to rule it a no-ball for height. The Indian players were back in the pavilion by then, preparing for the chase before bad light caused any further disruption. Tilak, along with the team management, spoke with the reserve umpire and walked out with the team to bowl the final ball again.

Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have been dropped amid an ECB nightclub probe as Joe Root takes over the Test captaincy. Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker set for Test debuts in England's final XII vs New Zealand.

England will hand Test debuts to keeper-batter Jordan Cox and seamer Sonny Baker for the second Test against New Zealand at the Oval in London. Days after the ECB launched a probe into the nightclub episode involving former captain Ben Stokes and quick Gus Atkinson, the hosts dropped them from the squad for the second Test, with veteran Joe Root named an interim captain. Another uncapped keeper, James Rew, could also make his debut in the second Test starting on Wednesday (Jun 17). Pace bowler Ollie Robinson, who returned to Test cricket for the first time in two years during the series opener at Lord’s, has also pulled out due to a knee injury. He picked seven wickets in the first Test, helping beat New Zealand and take a 1-0 lead in this three-match series. Meanwhile, Rew would step in if regular keeper Jamie Smith leaves on paternity leave in the next two days. On the other hand, Baker bolsters the pace attack alongside Jofra Archer, who missed the first Test due to his Indian Premier League commitments with Rajasthan Royals. Fast bowler Matthew Fisher was also included for his second Test appearance -- his first in more than four years -- as spinner Shoaib Bashir dropped out. Root takes over Test reign Root got the nod to take over from Stokes temporarily instead of vice-captain Harry Brook. Brook was involved in an altercation outside a nightclub in Wellington before a one-day international against New Zealand in October. "It became pretty obvious that after talking to both Joe and Harry, that Joe was the right person to do it," England head coach Brendon McCullum said. "He's actually excited, because while he gave it everything he could last time around, he feels he's in a much better place now to be able to do that job. "There's been a few changes. Whilst there's been a bit of chaos and it's been difficult to navigate through the week, I look at that line-up we have this week, and it's super exciting. “I'm quietly confident we're going to see some exciting cricket.” England Final XII for the second Test - Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root (captain), Harry Brook, Jamie Smith (or James Rew), Jordan Cox, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Matthew Fisher, Sonny Baker (With inputs from AFP)
