Former Australian captain Michael Clarke survived a horrifying car crash hours after the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad. On his way to the airport following RCB’s second successive IPL win last Sunday (May 31), the car in which Clarke was travelling crashed into a semi-trailer and ended up partially wedged underneath the truck. While recalling the accident, which he calls a ‘frightening experience’, Clarke thanked the ‘good Indian people’ because of whom he survived and could reach home safely. "Interesting trip home, to say the least," Clarke revealed on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast. "Let me start by saying thank God for good people in India. That's why I made it home safely." Travelling as a passenger, Clarke said he was asleep on the way to the airport and was jolted awake by the impact of the crash. "Thank God for good people in India." Former Australia captain Michael Clarke opens up about surviving a horrifying highway car crash after the IPL 2026 final.

Revealing more about the accident, Clarke said the car driver explained what led to the crash, and the car coming underneath the truck. Then I woke up to virtually the front half of the car being under a truck," Clarke revealed. "The driver explained to me that the brake lights on the truck weren't working. So my driver had hit the truck from the backside. Again, it was a big semi-trailer, and our car had gone underneath. The car's certainly written off," he added. Clarke raises concern for the driver While the two-time ODI World Cup winner got away with a few bruises, he feared worse for the driver, whom he thinks suffered a fracture in his legs. Clarke also noted how deeply shaken the driver was, given that the vehicle belonged to his employer rather than being his personal car. Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir revealed Sai Sudharsan as the new number three for India in Tests over Devdutt Padikkal. Sai will continue to bat in his usual position after brief exploits in England and against the West Indies and South Africa during the home series last year. The left-hander is coming off a brilliant IPL 2026 with the bat, scoring 722 runs in 17 matches, including a hundred. In the whites, Sudharsan has played six Tests, scoring 302 runs, with two fifties to his name. While he played three of those Tests on the England tour, Sai registered 7, 87, 39, 15, and 14 in the remaining five innings at home. With the one-off Test against Afghanistan on the horizon, Gambhir has backed the Gujarat Titans' opener to continue in his role, promising him an extended run at that position. In Pics | Meet top 5 batters in latest ICC T20I rankings 2026 - check who sits at the top “Sai Sudharsan has not got a fair chance. He has only played a handful of Test matches. And he started his Test career in England, which we all know is not the easiest place (for batters). He has had a phenomenal run in the IPL as well, and we have got to give him a fair chance,” Gambhir said to reporters on the eve of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh.
Coach explains why Padikkal has to wait
Granting a longer rope to Sai at number three means another contender for that spot, Devdutt Padikkal, might have to wait longer for his chances. Gambhir explained that although only one player (of the two) can play at that position, it’s Sai for now, and Padikkal should be patient for his turn. Explaining the reason behind choosing Sai over Padikkal, Gambhir said, “We can (only) pick 11 (players), and some will have to wait for an opportunity. Sai is not in bad form either. He scored, what, 700 runs in IPL. If judging players by just four or five matches is good enough, then I feel we will never be able to build something. “Hopefully (Padikkal) will get his time. Whenever his time comes, we will give him a fair run as well. It is not about giving someone five Tests and someone else one Test. If we give someone a fair run, we will give the other guy an opportunity whenever it comes up. At the moment, we need to give Sai a fair run. He is a world-class player, and I am sure he will come good,” he added. Moreover, since ICC rules dictate that for a series to fall under the ongoing WTC cycle, it must have at least two Test matches, this one-off Test between India and Afghanistan is a stand-alone match, with its result not impacting the Indian Team's WTC standings.

IND vs AFG: Gautam Gambhir confirms Sai Sudharsan as India's no. 3 over Devdutt Padikkal

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has backed the International Cricket Council (ICC) proposal to allow the use of a pink ball in place of the traditional red ball when Test matches are interrupted due to poor light. His comments came ahead of India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, a match that could potentially be affected by fading light conditions. Gambhir emphasised that teams should not miss crucial opportunities to have a result due to factors beyond their control. He added that losing valuable playing time because of bad light could have significant consequences, especially in the race for qualification to the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Speaking to reporters on Friday (Jun 5), Gambhir said he fully supports the initiative, arguing that every effort should be made to ensure matches reach a meaningful conclusion. He pointed out that it would be disappointing for a team to miss out on WTC qualification after two years of hard work simply because weather or light conditions prevented play. "I love that because I've always believed that if there's an opportunity to get a result, you should always have that opportunity. Shreyas Iyer will replace Suryakumar Yadav as Team India’s new T20I captain, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is likely to earn his maiden India call-up for the forthcoming UK tour. With an eye on the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles and the T20 World Cup the same year in Australia and New Zealand, the BCCI selectors have decided to make these sweeping changes. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel will announce the T20I squad for the Ireland and England series on Saturday (Jun 6), Team India’s first assignment since Suryakumar Yadav-led India won the T20 World Cup in March this year. The selectors have also decided to drop Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I squads following his lean patch in the T20 WC and IPL 2026. At the World Cup, his best performance came against the USA in India’s opener; later, SKY failed to score another T20I fifty, amassing 242 runs in nine innings. Even at IPL 2026 with Mumbai Indians, SKY managed a mere 270 with the bat in 13 innings and averaged just above 20. Also read | IND vs AFG, one-off Test: Kuldeep eyes red-ball redemption after underwhelming IPL 2026 Meanwhile, SKY’s successor, Iyer, hasn’t played a T20I since December 2023. Although Iyer returned for the New Zealand T20Is just before the marquee event as an injury replacement, he did not play a game as the management backed the WC-bound XI in all matches. Iyer, however, has proved his captaincy credentials, having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third league title in 2024; later, he led Punjab Kings to the final next season, only to lose to the RCB. This season, Iyer’s batting form and leadership were on full display, at least during the first half of the season, when Punjab led the points table with six wins in seven matches. However, a second-half turnaround saw them fall shy of the top-four finish. In the do-or-die match against the LSG, Iyer smashed his maiden IPL hundred and won the game for his team, but unfortunately for them, Rajasthan Royals qualified. In IPL 2025, Iyer scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 and 498 in the following season, striking at 168.81. On the other hand, should the selectors hand Sooryavanshi his call-up, he will become the youngest Indian player to be picked for the senior men's team since the great Sachin Tendulkar. Sooryavanshi’s selections come on the back of a brilliant IPL 2026, where he won the Orange Cap (776 runs in 16 matches) and four other awards, creating history. However, before the UK tour, Vaibhav will feature in the ODI tri-series involving the A teams of India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan starting June 9 in Dambulla.

In a massive T20I shake-up, Shreyas Iyer is set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's new captain for the UK tour, while IPL sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lines up for a historic maiden call-up. Check out the full selection details ahead of Saturday's squad announcement.

India is gearing up for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, starting in just two days, and Kuldeep Yadav, the ace spinner, admits feeling pressured switching from the IPL mode to red-ball cricket. Although ready and raring to go in his shot at redemption following an underwhelming IPL season, Kuldeep wants to get back to picking up wickets and feeling the same when he is at the top of his game. "It is tough when you switch from IPL cricket to red-ball cricket," Kuldeep said in a chat with PTI facilitated by JioHotstar. After Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews became the first batter in all of international cricket to be ‘timed out’ during the 2023 World Cup clash against Bangladesh, Bhutan batter Ritshi Choden became the first women’s cricketer to be dismissed similarly. Choden took more than 90 seconds to arrive at the crease during a T20I against Nepal, with the fielder’s appeal upheld by the on-field umpires. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), however, apologised for the decision, saying that despite this falling within the rule books, it does not reflect the ‘spirit of the game’. This instance occurred in the first over of the run chase during an ACC Premier Cup tie between the two teams in Malaysia. After opener Ngawang Choden departed for a golden duck, Ritshi, who was supposed to walk in next, was likely not ready to come out. "The incident involving the timed-out dismissal of a Bhutanese batter during today's match does not reflect the values and spirit of cricket that the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) strives to uphold," CAN said. "On behalf of the Cricket Association of Nepal, we extend our sincere apologies for the actions of our Women's National Team in this matter. While the dismissal was effected within the Laws of Cricket, we recognise that the spirit of the game extends beyond the written laws and must remain central to our conduct at all times. "As a developing cricketing nation, we place the utmost importance on sportsmanship, mutual respect, and fair play. We acknowledge that this incident has fallen short of those standards and regret any disappointment it may have caused. Since Cheteshwar Pujara’s exit from India’s Test side, the two-time WTC Final runners-up have failed to find a replacement for the crucial number three spot. Even though India tried several newcomers, including Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair and even Washington Sundar, nothing has worked yet. Currently sitting sixth in the WTC standings and needing to win at least seven of the remaining nine matches in this cycle, barring this Afghanistan Test, Team India needs to address this quickly. The latest report suggests that Kohli is advised to have a two-week rest. Although he should be fit in time for India’s first ODI against England on June 20, the selectors are unlikely to push for his selection for Afghanistan ODIs. Virat Kohli ruled out of Afghanistan ODI series with hamstring injury: Report Earlier, Gaikwad was added as a replacement for injured Riyan Parag to the India-A squad for the ODI tri-series after the vice-captain was ruled out with an injury. Patidar, on the other hand, is rewarded for his form with an India-A call-up. Meanwhile, midway through the run chase during the IPL 2026 final, Kohli is understood to have felt discomfort in his hamstring and needed medical attention. Though he continued to score runs, later also helping his team defend its IPL crown, tests revealed a hamstring injury. Besides Kohli, the selectors would also take a call on Rohit Sharma’s availability, considering his lingering hamstring issue, which kept him on the sidelines for a few Mumbai Indians’ games this season. The chief selector Ajit Agarkar has mentioned that Rohit’s selection would depend on him clearing the fitness test. Per a Times of India (TOI) report, Rohit hasn’t reported at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE). However, should Rohit fail to clear the test, the selectors might call up Yashasvi Jaiswal as his replacement. In the meantime, the selectors will meet on Saturday (Jun 6) to pick squads for Ireland and England T20Is. After the home series against Afghanistan, including a one-off Test and three ODIs, India will travel to the UK to face Ireland for two T20Is and England for five T20Is and three ODIs.
