New Delhi, India
India beat Bangladesh by seven wickets on Day 5 of the second and final Test at the Green Park Stadium, Kanpur on Tuesday (Oct 1). The day commenced with Bangla Tigers reeling at 26-2, still trailing India by another 26. They eventually folded for 146, setting up a 95-run target which India chased down successfully courtesy of Yashasvi Jaiswal's 51. With this, India swept the two-match series 2-0.
India's win became possible after their bowlers combined to dismiss Bangladesh for 233 on the penultimate day, on Monday (Sep 30), after the previous days got completely washed out due to rain and a wet outfield. Thus, Bangladesh started Day 4 at 107-3 but got dismissed cheaply. In reply, Indian batters breathed life into the rain-marred contest by scoring over eight an over to declare at 285-9. With a 52-run lead, India dictated terms with Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja's three-fers pushing Bangladesh behind. As a result, India earned a memorable win and a 2-0 scoreline.
After the series triumph, Ashwin, Player-of-the-Series awardee, hailed captain Rohit Sharma for pushing India for a win, with their aggressive batting, despite two days being wasted.
At the post-match presentation, Ashwin said, "When we bowled them out yesterday, it was little after lunch. Rohit was keen that we needed 80 overs to bowl at them. And the moment he came inside out and gave that talk where we're going to go after it even if we get out under 230. It's not only him saying it, he went out there and hit his first ball for six. He set the tone that way and obviously follows on from there."
As a result of Rohit's pep talk, Jaiswal (72), KL Rahul (68) and Virat Kohli (47), along with others, adopted an aggressive approach to give India a slender 52-run lead.
Rohit-led India continue to top the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table for the 2023-25 cycle following the Bangladesh series. They now have a win percentage of 74.24, with Australia and Sri Lanka being in the second and third spot, respectively.
India's next series is a three-match Test series versus New Zealand at home, starting on October 16 in Bengaluru.
