IPL 2024: 'There's a lack of...,' Ex-India batter explains reason behind removing Rohit Sharma as MI skipper
IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma had accused the broadcasters of breaching players privacy
Former India batter Robin Uthappa has said that Rohit Sharma's form for Mumbai Indians in the last three-four year could have been a reason that he was removed from captaincy. Notably, Hardik Pandya had replaced Rohit as MI skipper ahead of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Uthappa made the observation while talking on the TRS podcast.
"In the last four years, statistically... I'm never gonna question the calibre and the gloriousness of Rohit Sharma the batter. But look at it from a franchise perspective. They won in 2020. They didn't win in the last three years. And the last three years, Rohit scored less than 300 runs (only once). So there's a lack of success as a batter, a lack of success as a captain. In just the IPL cause everywhere else, he has scored runs," Uthappa said.

"Hardik Pandya is their discovery. They did it through their scouting methods. So they are essentially looking at a pure Mumbai Indians boy. When captaincy was given to Rohit Sharma it was taken from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the season. This is the same franchise. All the senior guys Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, and Ricky Ponting supported Rohit," Uthappa added.
Notably, Rohit has not been able to make an impact with the bat in the league since scoring 405 runs in 2019 season. The India skipper, who has more than 6,500 runs in 250 IPL games, has scored 1,313 runs at an average of 23.8 in 55 games from 2020-2023.
In the ongoing season, however, he's been in rich form, scoring 297 runs in seven matches he has played. He has scored these runs at an average of 49.5 and a strike rate of 164. Mumbai Indians although, aren't performing that well, winning just three games so far and losing four.
