IND vs NZ: New Zealand in pole position in Pune Test after Indian batters disappoint on Day 2

New Zealand sat in pole position in the Pune Test after Indian batters had yet another horror day. Playing at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, New Zealand ended Day 2 at 198/5 and lead by 301 runs. This came after Indian batters failed to impress and were bowled out for 156 in their first innings. As things stand, India are on the brink of their first Test series loss on home turf after more than a decade.

With India coming out to bat at 16/ after Day 1, the hosts searched for an advantage with Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) and Shubman Gill (30) in the middle. However, Rohit Sharma’s men lost wickets in consistent intervals which saw them get bowled out for 156. Ravindra Jadeja was the highest scorer with 38 runs while Washington Sundar (18) and Rishabh Pant (18) also did not contribute a great deal as Indian batters failed to impress.

The stern tail of Indian batters also did not have the best outing with Ravichandran Ashwin (4) also failing tremendously. On the other hand, Mitchell Santner was running the show as he followed Washington Sundar’s footsteps to bag seven wickets. He ended with figures of 53/7 while there were wickets for Glenn Phillips (26/2) and Tim Southee (18/1).

New Zealand on top

Having secured a lead of 103 runs, New Zealand concentrated on cementing their lead with skipper Tok Latham scoring, getting out for 86. Washington Sundar was yet again at the centre of attention after he scalped further four wickets to add to his seven wickets from the first innings. At Stumps New Zealand were 198/5 and lead by a total of 301 runs.

Considering India’s batting collapse in the series, the total could be out of sight for the hosts as they now are on the brink of their first Test series defeat on home turf since 2013.
