Champions Trophy 2025: ICC approves hybrid model after long saga, India to play in Dubai
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has called for an emergency meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on the future of the Champions Trophy. According to reports, ICC will try to resolve the scheduling issues of the CT with India refusing to travel to Pakistan. The Champions Trophy 2025 is set to be hosted by Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, but clouds of uncertainty linger after BCCI refused to travel to Pakistan.
ICC to hold meeting with BCCI, PCB
According to reports from Sports Tak, ICC will meet with representatives of BCCI and PCB on Tuesday (Nov 26) which will focus on convincing either board to stage the Champions Trophy in a smooth manner. ICC will first focus on convincing BCCI to travel to Pakistan, however, if India are reluctant they will look to convince the hosts to move into a hybrid model.
Champions Trophy to be held in hybrid model?
As things stand, with less than three months to go for the Champions Trophy to start, Pakistan is not yet confident of hosting the entire tournament with the Indian team reluctant to travel. Pakistan’s proposal to host India’s matches including the final has been rejected by the BCCI, leaving ICC with three options.
Like 2008, the Champions Trophy could be postponed until a solution is met as the ICC could explore the idea. On the other hand, India’s reluctance to travel could force them out of the tournament if they are forfeited. However, that option looks unlikely due to India’s brand value in cricket and Jay Shah set to become the chairperson of the board of directors of ICC.
