Volkswagen revealed its new fully-electric SUV model called ID.UNYX in China on Wednesday as the German car maker intensifies its bid for a bigger slice of the booming market for eco-friendly cars such as EVs. Available at a base price of under USD 30,000, the ID.UNYX is set to enter direct competition with popular electric cars from BYD and Tesla in the world’s largest EV market.
As stated earlier, Volkswagen brand CEO, Stefan Mecha referred to the ID.UNYX as a further extension of the ID. line where greater emphasis is put on avant-garde design targeting young consumers in China. At the launch event, Mecha highlighted the importance of the new ID.UNYX, stating, “With the new ID.UNYX, we are enriching our electric ID. models offered in China with an innovative product.”
The ID.UNYX is offered in three trims: Pro, Ultra, and Max. The entry-level Pro starts at approximately USD 29,000 (RMB 209,900), the Ultra is priced around USD 31,700 (RMB 229,900), and the top-tier Max starts at USD 34,400 (RMB 249,900). Developed on the Volkswagen's MEB platform, the ID.UNYX stands 4,663 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,610 mm in height. The Tesla Model Y for instance is slightly bigger being 4,751 mm long, 1,921 mm wide and 1,624 mm tall. Tesla Model Y has the base model priced at USD 34,400 (RMB 249,900) and the Model Y Long Range AWD costs USD 40,000 (RMB 290,900) and has up to 344 to 427 miles (554 km to 688 km) CLTC.
The ID.UNYX is produced by the Volkswagen Anhui which is an automotive assembly joint venture between the Volkswagen Group and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC) that began its operation in 2017. Volkswagen controls the joint of venture with 75% while JAC has 25% stake. The specific model was designed and is built in the auto maker’s new development center/ high-tech electric car manufacturing hub in Hefei, Anhui Province, China.
Since VW is planning to launch four more models under this new sub-brand in the next three years to increase its market share which has dwindled over the time. There was a significant decline of 7% of the deliveries of Volkswagen Group in the first half of the 2024 mainly due to cutthroat competition. According to Chinese leaders like BYD, which has models like Dolphin and Seagull in planning, the firm’s market penetration in the new segments may shrink the foreign brands market share from 40% to the current 10% in the next few years.
