NEW DELHI: SA20 – South Africa's premier franchise-based T20 tournament – is moving into its fifth season. Over the last four years, it has established itself as one of the leading T20 tournaments in the world, with players from across the globe participating in it. The tournament has six franchises – Durban's Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape – owned by IPL franchises of the same name. Graeme Smith, former SA skipper and the SA20 commissioner, spoke to WION in a conversation after the season 5 auction about how the league became a sustainable product and how it has helped South African cricket.
How IPL franchises helped SA20 become sustainable
"There were always going to be a couple of key fundamentals up front that you needed to get right. Cricket South Africa took the decision to build outside and brought in a big broadcaster as a shareholder, which really helped give us the base to build the business model of the league and go to market," said Smith in an interaction facilitated by SA20 post-Season 5 Auction. Also Read - 'They’re paid to do,' says Head about Hayden's comment on AUS squad for SA Tests"We were also fortunate to have met over 40 different potential investors at the time. Smith credits the rise of Proteas cricket to SA20 and said: "We've been able to build a really high performing operational team, and delivering the tournament at scale in a really efficient way every year has really provided the base for our cricketers. And that's what we wanted to do.""Now we get to put 60 or 70 of South Africa's top talent on the stage every year, which I think really was the major motivation. Everyone talks about the finances, but I think seeing South African cricket strong for all of us that have played and been a part of the system for a very long time, is what we wanted."There was a period where you would look at it and you were pretty nervous about where South African cricket was going to go. So in five years, to see our national team performing well, talent coming through, and that the system is relatively solid, I think is probably the biggest one out of all of it."

Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith highlighted how SA20's IPL franchise backing and solid business model transformed South African cricket, nurturing top talent and driving recent international success.

NEW DELHI: Australia batter Travis Head has clapped back at former opener Matthew Hayden indirectly for his recent comments on the selection of the Australian team for the South Africa Test tour. Australia begins a three-Test tour against South Africa on Friday (Oct 9) in Durban. Hayden's comments came after the recall of 34-year-old Nic Maddinson to the Australian side after a long gap of 10 years. Aussie selectors decided to hand Maddinson a comeback after injuries to Josh Inglis and Cameron Green. Hayden, on a podcast, had called the team selection "the greatest pile of mediocrity that we’ve seen in a generation of cricket."
Head claps back at criticism of Aussie team selection
Head was at the press conference in Durban before the first Test when he said to reporters about the criticism from recent players: "I think it’s unfairly judged a fair bit from a group of past players, pretty much that put the bullet through a lot of players, which I think is unfair. But that’s what they’re paid to do. Some of them need a job, so they go after us, and that’s totally fine."Also Read - ‘Dreams do come true’: Iyer reflects on match-winning 102* vs WI in T20I openerHead, however, brushed aside any impact of Hayden's comments on the selected squad and said: "This group is strong enough to deal with those sorts of things. South Africa, the defending WTC champions, is currently placed second on the WTC 2025-27 points table with 75 percent, while Australia, the two-time consecutive finalists and WTC 2021-23 winners, is on top with 80 percent points.A win in the three-match series by either team will go a long way toward securing a place in the ongoing WTC cycle final for both contenders.

Controversies and low points of Agarkar’s tenure
India’s ODI cricket peaked during the home World Cup in 2023, only for Australia to beat India in the final and break a billion hearts. Mohammed Shami, who starred for the Men in Blue in that tournament, picking up 23 wickets in seven matches, was amongst the top names who were phased out of white-ball squads following the Champions Trophy success. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned to the Indian squad for the forthcoming New Zealand T20Is after nearly four years with Ojha leading the selection panel, also never got his turn during Agarkar’s spell as the chief selector. Besides, uncertainty over the futures of two stalwarts, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and reports of Rohit quitting ODI cricket following the Lord’s ODI in July this year, turned things from bad to worse between the board, selection committee, the two players and the team management, leading to Agarkar’s exit. Moreover, several clean sweeps, including India's shocking 2-0 T20I series loss in Ireland and a 4-0 bashing at the hands of England on the previous UK tour, did not help the cause.

Gautam Gambhir penned a heartfelt note for outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar, praising his 'team first' mentality following his decision to step down as BCCI selection committee chairman.

FIFA World Cup 2026, held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico earlier this year, faced criticism for multiple reasons including accommodation in host cities, scheduling, ticket prices, and more. During the tournament, one of the major controversies which erupted was allowing US player Folarin Balogun to play in the match against Belgium in the Round of 16 despite getting a red card in the previous match against Bosnia. Another controversy regarding a player's eligibility has now come to the fore with accusations that FIFA allowed an ineligible player to take part in the World Cup.
Did FIFA allow an ineligible player to take part in World Cup 2026?
According to a FIFA internal investigation, as reported by The Guardian, the apex body found that the Democratic Republic of the Congo had fielded an ineligible player in the qualifiers. Later on, the player, Lionel Mpasi – a goalkeeper – played in the main tournament as well, including in the Round of 32 against England. Nigeria, who played against DRC in November in the qualifiers, had reported the issue to FIFA. The investigators, who work independently, knew about the situation before DRC played against Jamaica in the final intercontinental playoff round in March, reported The New York Times and Le Monde. FIFA, however, rejected the complaint on the basis that the complaint was made outside the required time frame. Was Infantino involved? FIFA chief Gianni Infantino was not involved in the investigation process, but his name might be involved as his former university associate, Véron Mosengo-Omba, was elected unopposed as president of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) earlier this year in May. CONCACAF, the confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean football associations, which has Jamaica as its member, said in a statement: "It takes player eligibility matters very seriously and expects the applicable regulations and procedures to be applied consistently and fairly in all competitions" and that any "concerns regarding player eligibility" should be "thoroughly reviewed and addressed through FIFA’s appropriate governance and disciplinary bodies."

A FIFA probe revealed DRC fielded ineligible keeper Lionel Mpasi in World Cup 2026 after failing to switch nationalities. FIFA rejected Nigeria's complaint over late filing, drawing CONCACAF concern.

Australia suffered a blow to their preparations for the Test series against South Africa after losing key all-rounder Cameron Green for the series opener in Durban starting Friday (Oct 9). Green suffered an abdominal strain while batting during the third ODI in Potchefstroom. Even if Green recovers at some point in the series, he will only play as a batter. During the third and final ODI, Corbin Bosch hit Green in the stomach, after which the lanky all-rounder smashed him for a six before being dismissed on the next ball. Despite the blow, there is optimism within the Australian medical camp, which expects Green to feature in the second and third Tests in Gqeberha or Cape Town, respectively. "He's (Green) progressing pretty well, all things considered," Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said ahead of the team's first full training session at Kingsmead, venue for the first Test. "He's still here for a reason, so there is some light at the end of the tunnel. It'll just be a matter of going through the rehab. "He's got a pretty demanding week this week as he reintroduces a few activities, and you'll see that probably play out in the net situation [and] during lunchtime, in and around the game. It's a bit of an unknown, but there's still optimism that he will take part in the series at some point,” he said. Also read| SA vs AUS 2026: South Africa to take call on Rabada’s availability for first Test ‘as late as possible’ Speaking on Green’s bowling chances during the series, McDonald said, “That's highly unlikely. But, I mean, what a great story. He's come back in, he's had a full pre-season, he's looking fit and strong [and he] peels off 100 in the first [one-day] game. Anyone that's been on the radar or there or thereabouts, they don't sort of drop off automatically,” McDonald said Moreover, McDonald also confirmed that Travis Head is ‘likely’ to continue in his role as the Test opener, with Matt Renshaw set to be his partner. India is among seven countries that want to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed in a public statement on Tuesday (Oct. 6). Besides India, Qatar and South Africa are also among the confirmed bidders, alongside Germany, Hungary, Turkey, and South Korea. Meanwhile, other countries have until October 31, 2026, to declare their interest in hosting the Olympic Games 10 years later. In March 2027, the IOC Executive Board will draw up a shortlist of the interested countries, which will then enter dialogue with the Olympic body. Anticipation builds as the BCCI men’s selection committee prepares to announce India’s squads for the upcoming New Zealand tour, with selectors likely to pick nearly 60 players across four squads: T20I, ODI, Test and ‘A’. India will play five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests, alongside three unofficial ‘A’ games, starting October 22. While the T20Is will coincide with the ‘A’ matches, the Pragyan Ojha-led selection committee faces a delicate task of balancing workload. As a result, the board is keen to give Test regulars more game time through ‘A’ games ahead of the two Tests, which begin on November 19. Also read| Pragyan Ojha to chair New Zealand series selection meet; squads expected in next 48 hours A Times of India (TOI) report claims India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer could lead the ODI team in the final two One-Dayers. Key Test starters—including ODI skipper Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah—are expected to miss the last leg of the ODI series to feature in the final shadow match before red-ball action begins in Wellington. Moreover, the Test squad could also feature 16 or 17 players, as the selectors want more pacers at their disposal, given the conditions and India’s urgency to climb the 2025-27 WTC points table with twin wins in New Zealand. Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna are currently in the mix, with Auqib Nabi, Mukesh Kumar and Anshul Kamboj competing for the sixth pace-bowling spot. All three are also likely to feature in India ‘A’ matches and could stay back as standbys to help the Test squad with preparations.
Red-Ball Cricket a Priority for BCCI Selectors
The BCCI men’s selection committee will convene on either Tuesday or Wednesday to finalise the four squads for the New Zealand tour, which begins with a five-match T20I series. While India’s white-ball cricket is not what the selection committee is worried about, the major focus remains on providing more red-ball exposure to the Test-bound players for the crucial two-match series — part of the current 2025-27 WTC cycle. Lack of clarity on Prasidh Krishna’s injury status postponed the meeting on Monday, with the selectors likely to have his update ready before announcing the squads. Besides, Rishabh Pant would be a sure starter for the two Tests, with Dhruv Jurel likely to be picked as his backup. The T20I series runs from October 22 to November 1, with five ODIs scheduled from November 4 to November 15. Wellington (Nov 19-23) and Christchurch (Nov 27-Dec 1) will host two Tests.

Red-Ball Cricket a Priority for BCCI Selectors The BCCI men’s selection committee will convene on either Tuesday or Wednesday to finalise the four squads for the New Zealand tour, which begins with a five-match T20I series.

BCCI selectors are set to pick nearly 60 players across four squads for the New Zealand tour, with Shreyas Iyer likely to lead in the last two ODIs.

IND vs NZ 2026: Iyer could lead India in last 2 ODIs to allow Test specialists extra prep time

South Africa will not rush ace seamer Kagiso Rabada’s return to the Test side. Batting coach Ashwell Prince said the selectors and management will decide on his participation in the series opener against Australia ‘as late as possible’. Rabada hasn’t played any cricket since IPL 2026, which ended in May, and later suffered a hamstring injury during winter training, ruling him out of the three-match ODI series last month. The right-arm pacer was earlier picked in the 18-man preliminary squad for the three Tests, and featured in a two-day intra-squad game on Sunday and Monday. "He (Rabada) came through quite nicely and bowled really well," Prince said in Durban, where the series gets underway on Friday (Oct 9). "He'll continue to be involved in training over the next few days leading up to the match." Although South Africa had earlier planned to pick a final 15 for the Test series, they ultimately retained the expanded squad to keep additional fast-bowling options on hand. Also read| Sourav Ganguly takes over as Delhi Capitals coach in ‘exciting responsibility’ "From the bowler's point of view, domestically there's T20 cricket going on at the moment, so we feel that they'll be better served here, where they will bowl more red balls in training," Prince said. “And if they're not in the Test lineup, then they can continue bowling during the Test match in the nets, just to get the loads up.”
Lack of Red-Ball Cricket Makes Rabada’s Case Trickier
Kagiso Rabada hasn’t played any Test cricket since touring Pakistan in October last year, later missing the two-Test away series against India with a rib injury. He also hasn’t played any first-class cricket in the meantime. All indications suggest that South Africa would want him 100% ready before unleashing him in the Durban Test against the mighty Aussies. "Fair to say that he's obviously not going to be at 100% straight away, but he is looking good," Prince said. "He will train with the squad for the rest of the week, and we will leave a call to be made as late as possible." For the first time in eight years, Australia has toured South Africa for a Test series, having last toured in 2018, when the infamous Sandpapergate scandal occurred. South Africa will make a late call on Kagiso Rabada's fitness for the 1st Test against Australia in Durban as the pacer completes his injury recovery.
