US presidential election 2024: I decline to step aside, Biden tells Hill Democrats

United States (US) President Joe Biden told Hill Democrats on Monday (July 8) that he declined to step aside from the upcoming presidential election. In a letter to Congressional Democrats, President Bidenstood firm against calls for him to drop his candidacy.“...The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it’s time for it to end,” he said.
Biden, 81, stressed that he had one job which was to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November.“We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election,” he said.

“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump,” the president added.

Biden's letter came as calls have been mounting for him to drop from the presidential race following his dismal public debate performance.
Representatives Jerrold Nadler, Adam Smith, Mark Takano, andJoeMorelle, senior House Democrats who sit on the Judiciary, Armed Services, Veterans Affairs, and House Administration committees, were among those who called onthe 81-year-old to step aside.

Democrats also suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris, seen as the likeliest candidate to replaceBidenin the election were he to bow out, could perform well.
Party lawmakers now have a choice -decide whether to work to revive Biden's campaign or edge out the party leader, a make-or-break time for his reelection and their political futures, a report by the news agency Associated Press said.
'Clock is ticking'
Last week, Democratic SenatorChris Murphy told CNN that the coming week was crucial and urged Bidento hold a town hall or news conference to convince voters he is "the oldJoeBiden."
"The president needs to do more.I do think the clock is ticking," Senator Murphy said.
