In scenes straight out of a gory horror film, a climate activist pretended to drown themselves in oil and gas in a protest outside a United Nations agency in London. Others brandished petrol pumps with flames spouting out of them.

The group was staging a protest against Liquid Natural Gas to show the effect it had on the oceans of the world.

The horrific protest unfolded in front of the International Maritime Organization, the UN agency responsible for regulating maritime transport. Members of the Ocean Rebellion group stood outside, with one of them dressed as an "ocean goddess".

She wore a fish bowl over her head which was filled with fake black oil by another person. A campaigner poured the fake oil inside the bowl from the top to create a scene where it looked like she was drowning.

The liquid engulfed her face, as she looked terrified "drowning" in the fake oil. It then drained out.

Others around her wore gas masks and put petrol pumps on fire.

Notably, the protests happened as the agency’s Marine Environment Protection Committee met on the final day to discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

Ocean Rebellion campaigners say that the agency is manipulating the fossil fuel industry. It says that the oceans are dying and the group is not doing anything to protect them.

"Poseidon, The Goddess of the Ocean is here to protect our seas! On Monday, she stood up against the #IMO’s greenwashing lies about LNG. We need real climate action, and she’s leading the charge!" the group wrote on X.

"Today, at the UN International Maritime Organisation, artists staged a powerful protest against #LNG. A drowning ocean goddess symbolizes the dire threat LNG poses to our oceans. #MEPC82 must act now," it added.

It further stressed that Liquid Natural Gas is harming the seas as ships running on them leak methane.

“Liquid Natural Gas is not a ‘green’ solution. Methane leaks from LNG ships are 80x more damaging than CO2. The IMO must wake up to this reality before it’s too late,” the group continued.

They slammed the agency for paying heed to fossil fuel lobbyists instead of working to protect the planet.

“The IMO is failing to protect our oceans. LNG is a dirty fuel disguised as clean. We demand transparency and accountability. Stop listening to fossil fuel lobbyists, start protecting our planet!”
