Israeli strike at UNRWA school sheltering displaced people in Gaza

US-made munitions were used by Israeli forces for the deadly strike on a school complex near Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Tuesday (Jul 9), areport in CNN has claimed. As many as 31 people lost their lives in the attack as Israel stepped up its military offensive in the region.

The report claimed that based on the video footagetaken by one of the journalists, a remnant of a US-made GBU-39 small-diameter bomb (SDB) was discovered from the spot.

“Based on the characteristic shape of the fin, the screw housings, as well as the overall shape of the munition fragment///this remnant is consistent with a GBU-39-series tail actuation system located in the rear of the munition,” Patrick Senft, a research coordinator at Armament Research Services (ARES) was quoted as saying by the publication.

US to resume shipping weapons to Israel

According to reports, the Biden administration will resume shipping 500-pound bombs to Israelbut hold back on supplying 2,000-pound bombs.

“Our main concern had been and remains the potential use of 2,000lb bombs in Rafah and elsewhere in Gaza. Because our concern was not about the 500lb bombs, those are moving forward as part of the usual process,” a US official was quoted as saying in a report in theGuardian.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October last year till the end of June, the US has supplied at least 14,000 of the MK-84 2,000-pound bombs, 6,500 500-pound bombs, 3,000 Hellfire precision-guided air-to-ground missiles, 1,000 bunker-buster bombs, 2,600 air-dropped small-diameter bombs, and other munitions.

The re-supply of the weapons comes in the backdrop of Netanyahu last month claiming that Washington was withholding the munitions. He pleased the US officials to remedy the situation.
