French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday hailed Paris firefighters for their ''exemplary'' actions in battling the Notre-Dame cathedral blaze.

Macron hosted a ceremony at the Elysee Palace for the firefighters.

"The country and the entire world were watching us and you were exemplary," Macron told 300 people who helped in the fire on Monday night.

"You were the perfect example of what we should be," Macron added.

A major fire broke out at Notre-Dame cathedral on Monday afternoon which took some 400 firemen to put it out. The firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control some 14 hours after it began.

Macron has pledged that France would rebuild the cathedral in over five years.

Notre-Dame is owned by the state and has been at the centre of a years-long row between the nation and the Paris archdiocese over who should bear the brunt of costs for badly needed restoration work.
