Hackers gained control of hundreds of supermarket fridges and freezers in France over the weekend and remotely raised the temperatures to nearly 50 degrees Celsius, causing huge amounts of food to go bad. Parisian authorities said the full extent of the damage from the large-scale attack remains unclear. In fact, several of the tornadoes strike the northwest and the Mediterranean coastal area at night and mostly go unnoticed.
Why did a tornado form in France?
The tornado struck following five major heat domes in France and the Mediterranean region this season. It got exceptionally hot as heatwaves gripped the country. Extreme heat left the lower atmosphere exceptionally warm and laden with moisture. This created a large reservoir of convective energy (CAPE).

Europe is battling a brutal summer of extreme heat and devastating wildfires. Belgium has recorded some of its worst fires in decades, while thousands have been evacuated across Spain and Greece. Reports estimate around 16,000 excess deaths linked to the heat, with economic losses potentially crossing €200 billion. From scorched forests to overwhelmed communities, Europe is facing a climate crisis with a staggering human and economic cost.

Europe burns under extreme heat: Wildfires, deaths & €200 billion losses

A severe wave of wildfires is spreading across Europe, fueled by an intense summer heatwave, extreme drought and strong winds. Blazes have forced mass evacuations, destroyed homes and stretched emergency services, with the European Commission's Joint Research Centre warning of very extreme fire danger across parts of Central and Eastern Europe.

France's Constitutional Council has struck down President Macron's high-profile bill banning social media for children under 15, calling it a "disproportionate infringement" on freedom of expression. The court said the blanket ban failed to account for individual factors like a child's age, maturity, or family situation, and raised serious privacy concerns. The setback comes just weeks after French lawmakers overwhelmingly passed the bill, which would have made France the first EU country with such an age limit.

Europe's brutal 2026 fire season shows no signs of slowing. Wildfires have scorched 37,000 hectares in Spain, while crews in Bosnia battle to contain a vast forest fire of their own. Meanwhile, England is grappling with a historic drought, with dry conditions fueling blazes that have damaged properties across the country.

A massive swarm of jellyfish clogged the cooling system at a nuclear plant in northern France, forcing 5 of 6 reactors to shut down. The 5.4 GW facility provides a huge chunk of France’s nuclear power, which makes 70% of the country’s electricity. This is the second jellyfish shutdown in a year. EDF says there’s no danger, and reactors will restart soon. The incident shows how rising sea temps and marine changes are creating new threats to nuclear plants.
