Watch: 'Great epoch-making significance,' says North Korea's ally China on Trump-Kim talks

As US President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un concluded their historic day-long meeting, China said it would continue to "play a constructive role" as US and North began their much-awaited peace talks.

China which is North Korea's principal ally has kept a close eye on the Trump-Kim meeting, and has been in touch with the North Korean leader ever since President Trump had announced the meeting in March.

"The fact that the top leaders of the United States and DPRK(North Korea) are sitting together today for a dialogue on an equal-footing in itself is of a great epoch-making significance," China's foreign minister Wang Yi said.

President Trump and Kim Jong-un met in a picturesque Capella hotel in Singapore on the resort island of Sentosa as they concluded a plan for "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean Peninsula with both leaders seemingly elated to meet each other after months of trading insults with each other.

Kim had earlier travelled to Singapore in a Chinese airliner underlying China's importance in North Korean affairs.

"China, of course, welcomes such a development because this has been the objective it has long been anticipated and worked for," Wang said adding,"we hope the leaders of the two countries will overcome interference, build mutual trust, surmount difficulties, and reach basic consensus on promoting and achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula."

Wang said he hopes the two sides will achieve peace and denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula.

"We hope that relevant parties will play an active role in the process, and China will continue to play its constructive role," he added.

The Chinese foreign minister had earlier called for "full denuclearisation" of the Korean Peninsula.
