Former British police officer charged with sexual offences against two women

A former officer of the Metropolitan Police Service (Met Police) was on Monday (Oct 7) charged with sexual offences against two women. The accused was identified as 49-year-old David Carrick.

In a statement, the Hertfordshire Constabulary said that Carrick was charged with five counts of indecent assault, two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault."He has also been charged with one count of coercive and controlling behaviour," the constabulary said.

“As criminal proceedings against this defendant are active, there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice his right to a fair trial,” it added.

A look at the charges against Carrick

The charges against Carrick date back to more than 30 years ago when he was a teenager. The five counts of indecent assault are in connection with the alleged attacks on one woman from 1989 to 1990 when Carrick was 14, a report by The Guardian on Monday said.

Between 2014 and 2019, Carrickattacked another woman and was charged with two counts of rape, one count of sexual assault, and one count of coercive and controlling behaviour.

'A complex investigation'

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Moor, who led the probe in the case, said on Monday that the charges against Carrick "come in the wake of an extensive and complex investigation conducted over a period of several months.”

Carrick's first court appearance would take place at 10 am on October 17 at theWestminster Magistrates’ Court.
