‘Can you sleep at night?’ CEO of Australian supermarket chain confronted on camera

‘Can you sleep at night?’ CEO of Australian supermarket chain confronted on camera

Woolworths CEO

In the midst of a cost of living crisis in Australia, two residents of New South Wales confronted the CEO of retail chain Woolworths Supermarkets in a store about price gouging allegations.

Amanda Bardwell was caught off-guard when the two went up to her and started telling her that "millions" of Australians are suffering amid the rising prices of general commodities. The video was posted on TikTok and has racked up over 400,000 views.

"What do you have to say about the fact that your company is profiting off price gouging during the context of the cost of living crisis?," the woman, named Megan, asked Bardwell.

The CEO responded with a cliche answer, saying, "Thank you for reaching out to us. We are doing everything we can to recognise that customers are doing it tough...to make sure they are able to get great prices at Woolies."

The woman then goes on to slam the chain for preying on common people, adding that "millions of people in Australia right now have to skip meals in order to survive."

The customer was equipped with ample ammo to confront Bardwell and told her "Your company has just bought a full extra supermarket chain... so that you can continue to make big bucks while working-class people suffer ... can you sleep at night doing that?"

Bardwell returns with the same response, saying that her "team is doing everything they can to support customers. We understand it is an incredibly difficult time right now."

A store worker also replies to Megan, saying that they have lowered prices and are offering discounts, which Megan says are of no use to the common man.

Bardwell then thanked Megan for sharing her "views" as the store personnel and others accompanying the CEO tried to wrap up the discussion.

The man behind the camera adds, "It's not [our] views its reality that millions of Australians are struggling, [doing it] so tough and you're the one behind price gouging and profiting off this."

The store worker intervened again, saying that it is "illegal to videotape someone without their permission in New South Wales. We don't appreciate."

The woman continues to speak as the executives walk away.

Notably, Bardwell was recently appointed CEO and has been visiting several stores around the country to meet teams on the ground.
