At least 5 killed, 35 injured as tornado wreaks havoc in Iowa

Atleast fivepeople died and 35 were injured in a tornado that devastated a small town in Iowa, officials said.
The number of people injured is likely higher, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said on Wednesday (May 22). The names of those killed haven’t been released.
The tornado carved a path of destruction through Greenfield, a town of 2,000 located approximately 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) southwest of Des Moines.
It left behind a wide swath of obliterated homes, shattered trees, and mangled cars. Additionally, the twister tore apart and crumpled large wind turbines used for power generation several miles outside the town.
Rescue teams were searching through mounds of debris on Wednesday to be sure no victims remained buried in the rubble.
“It’s still a search mission as far as we’re looking to be sure all residents are accounted for,” said Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla.

Tornado warnings were reported across Iowa, including close to the towns of Corning, Griswold, Guthrie Center, and Fontanelle. In one incident, a tornado took down several 250-foot wind turbines in Iowa.
The National Weather Service said initial surveys indicated at least an EF-3 tornado in Greenfield, but additional damage assessment could lead to a more powerful ranking.
The fatal tornado emerged during a remarkably tumultuous tornado season in the US, coinciding with a period where climate change is intensifying the ferocity of storms globally. April witnessed the second-highest tally of tornadoes ever recorded in the country.
There have been 859 confirmed tornadoes this year, 27% more than the US sees on average, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. So far, Iowa hashad the most, with 81 confirmed twisters.
On Tuesday alone, the National Weather Service said it received 23 tornado reports, with most in Iowa and one each in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Tuesday’s tornado also saw flooding and power outages in Nebraska, damage from tornadoes in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and dust storms in Illinois that forced two interstates to be closed.
