South Korea's ruling Democratic Party has strengthened its political position by winning 12 of 16 major mayoral and provincial races in local elections. The results give President Lee Jae Myung's party broader control over regional governments just a year into his presidency. However, the conservatives secured an important symbolic victory as incumbent Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon retained his post.
