<p>Google Doodle on Friday (Aug 4) celebrated the life of US-based designer Altina Schinasi. She is most famously known for the trendy ‘cat-eye’ eyeglass frame design. The doodle marked the 116th birthday of the American designer with a doodle depicting Altina inside a cat-eye framed eyeglass.</p>

<p>Altina was born on August 4 in 1907 in Manhattan, New York, to immigrant parents. Her artistic journey took her from the streets of Manhattan to the vibrant art galleries of Paris where she pursued her passion for painting.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Altina Schinasi: Making of a designer&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Altina was born to Jewish parents in America in 1907. After being tutored at home, Altina attended Horace Mann School and left home at age 12 to board at Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>From designing windows to creating iconic ‘cat-eye’ frames</strong></h2>

<p>Altina’s first job after learning design was with Peter Copeland. She worked with him on a project to design windows for Fifth Avenue stores. It was in this job that she found herself working alongside Salvador Dali.</p>

<p>In her later life, Altina registers many patents for her inventions in the field of design. But her breakthrough came early on when she created and marketed the <strong>Harlequin eyeglass frame</strong> or the ‘cat-eye’ frame that defined glamour in the late 1930s.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 1939, Altina won the Lord &nbsp;&amp; Taylor Annual American Design Award for her avant-garde transformation of the eyeglass frame into a proper fashion accessory.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Speaking about participating in the bizarre contest, 22-year-old native of Naples Jake Waleri said that his major plan is to hunt snakes during his summer break from the University of Ohio.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Waleri said that he has knowledge about the Burmese pythons, which is an invasive species that took over the Everglades and wreaked havoc on Florida's natural habitat.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">He developed an interest in python hunting after he watched professional hunters on television, and began hunting the snakes himself two years ago. Last year, he participated in the state’s annual python hunting contest called “Florida Python Challenge”, however, he dropped out in between because he was lagging behind in the rankings.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The Florida Python Challenge attracts hundreds of participants every year from Canada, Belgium and Latvia, who have been charmed by the prospect of fame and fortune, which includes around $30,000 (£23,600) in prize money.<o:p></o:p></p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal"><strong>Catching snakes with bare hands</strong><o:p></o:p></h2>

<p class="MsoNormal">Recent Python Challenge winners included a father-and-son duo who were able to rapidly despatch 41 snakes, a deaf science teacher who caught a 16ft snake with his bare hands and a 19-year-old who claimed that he will use his $10,000 prize for purchasing snake-spotting lights for his truck.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Waleri and his cousin, who is known as the Glade Boys, have been planning to hunt snakes every night once the contest starts on August 4. He said that they will keep energy drinks for the 10-day marathon contest, along with "a lot of bug spray - that's important".<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">He will also carry chest-high waders in case he requires to enter into the water, a roll of tape for sealing the mouth of the python before the kill as well as a snake stick for moving native venomous snakes from the road so that the cars do not hit them.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"If you're not comfortable with snakes, you're going to feel very, very out of place when you're trying to go grab that head. When you hesitate - then you got your hand right in front of that snake's head and it's gonna bite you,” he said.</p>

US: People hope to kill massive serpents in Florida’s Burmese pythons killing contest

<p>In yet another bizarre world record, a woman from Maryland, US has put her burping habit on display. Kimberly “Kimycola” Winter set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for her unusually loud burps in the female category.</p>

<p>As per GWR, her bellowing belch was 107.3 decibels loud, which surpassed the previous record of 107 dB, achieved by Elisa Cagnoni, from Italy, in the year 2009.</p>

<p>The record for the world's loudest burp for males is held by Neville Sharp from Australia, whose burp was measured at 112.7 dB in the year 2021.</p>

<p>Winter's "record-breaking burp is louder than a blender (70-80 dB), an electric handheld drill (90-95 dB), and even some motorcycles at full throttle (100-110 dB)," according to The Guinness World Records.</p>

<p>A 93-year-old grandmother from the United States is living her life to the fullest. At the age of 93, Grandma Joy has seen all 63 US national parks. Joy went on this epic journey with her grandson, Brad Ryan, who was first inspired to travel with his grandmother in 2015.</p>

<p>By the age of 85, Joy from Ohio had never even seen the ocean or mountains. But now, she has seen every corner of the United States by visiting all 63 national parks in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Joy told CBS News all the travelling she had done earlier was "to the fishing hole." &nbsp;</p>

<p>"Every winter, my husband took me to Okeechobee and we fished. That was about the extent of my wandering," she said.</p>

<h2><strong>A trip that gave the idea of travelling to all US national parks&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>It was her grandson Brad who decided to take her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This trip was memorable for Joy as she saw the mountains for the first time, but it also sparked the idea of travelling to all US national parks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When I learned she had never seen the great wildernesses of America – deserts, mountains, oceans, you name it – I thought that was something that would haunt me if I didn't intervene in some way," Brad told CBS News in October 2022.&nbsp;</p>

I just have to do this; I just have to have those memories for my own long-term happiness. I think we're two peas in a pod when it comes to just our desire for travel, adventure, connection.'"</p>

<p>The duo started planning road trips, hitting multiple parks each time they went on the road. The duo said that though they had many adventures during their travels some of their best memories happened while travelling in the car.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Greek Prime Minister&nbsp;Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that tourists who were forced to escape the island of Rhodes after recent wildfires will be given a free one-week holiday there.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking on a British morning show,&nbsp;Mitsotakis said the tourists could take up the offer in the spring or autumn of 2024. He, however, did not specify details of how the free week could be claimed, or how the logistics would work.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“For all those whose holiday was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes next spring, the next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty," said&nbsp;Mitsotakis on the show.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Not a single human life was lost in Rhodes, and no injuries were reported... We understand that guests have been inconvenienced, but I am happy to tell you that Rhodes is more welcoming than ever. The island is back to normal."</p>

<p>Local people as well as tourists were forced to flee their homes and hotels during the wildfires that ravaged the island last month. As many as 20,000 tourists were rescued from danger, in what was the largest evacuation undertaken by the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Greece, whose economy has been heavily battered over the past decade, relies heavily on tourism to generate revenue. Rhodes,&nbsp;the ninth-largest island in the eastern Mediterranean, is a popular holiday spot and&nbsp;Mitsotakis wants tourism to quickly return to previous levels.</p>

<h2><strong>Climate change increasing the intensity of wildfires</strong></h2>

<p>Up until last week,&nbsp;Mitsotakis was seen warning the Greek parliament that the Mediterranean was in peril due to climate change.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"For the next few weeks, we must be on constant alert. We are at war. We will rebuild what we lost, we will compensate those who were hurt,"&nbsp;Mitsotakis told parliament, as quoted by Reuters.</p>

<p>"The climate crisis is already here, it will manifest itself everywhere in the Mediterranean with greater disasters," he said.</p>

July was recorded as the hottest month in human history, with the UN stating that the "era of global warming" was over as we had entered the era of "global boiling".&nbsp;</p>

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that tourists who were forced to escape the island of Rhodes after recent wildfires will be given a free one-week holiday there. Speaking on a British morning show, Mitsotakis said the tourists could take up the offer in the spring or autumn of 2024. He, however, did not specify details of how the free week could be claimed, or how the logistics would work. “For all those whose holiday was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes next spring, the next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty," said Mitsotakis on the show. "Not a single human life was lost in Rhodes, and no injuries were reported... We understand that guests have been inconvenienced, but I am happy to tell you that Rhodes is more welcoming than ever. The island is back to normal." Local people as well as tourists were forced to flee their homes and hotels during the wildfires that ravaged the island last month. As many as 20,000 tourists were rescued from danger, in what was the largest evacuation undertaken by the country. <p>Henrietta Lacks was 31 years old when her cells were stolen without her consent.</p>

<p>Lacks used to live in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1951, she began experiencing pain in her abdomen with abnormal bleeding. She was examined by gynaecologists at John Hopkins Hospital, who discovered a large mass on her cervix.</p>

<p>Without informing her or asking for permission, doctors sent a sample of her tumour to the lab for medical research before treating her for aggressive cervical cancer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But, while nearly all cell cultures died quickly in the lab, cells taken from Lacks continued to multiply and didn’t age, making them almost “immortal”.</p>

<p>But the same properties that made the cells a scientific miracle proved to be lethal for Lacks. Months after her diagnosis, she died from cancer at 31 and was buried in an unmarked grave.</p>

<p>It was only decades later that the Lacks family discovered what had become of her cells.</p>

<p>The Anchorage Police Department issued a statement warning locals of an agitated black bear in the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Police wrote: "Good evening, everyone! We are having Alaska problems. It's a quarter to 10 pm on this finally sunny Sunday evening (7/30/23) and we are currently occupied with an extremely agitated black bear in the neighbourhoods near Baxter and Northern Lights."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You will see police in the area. Please use extreme caution if you are going to be outside. It would be a great idea to not leave garage doors and people doors to your home propped open right now," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But later, the police said it arrived at the scene and eventually killed the black bear.</p>

<p>The authorities confirmed it on a Facebook post: "The bear was dispatched last night as it was charging people and causing a public safety risk".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bear charged a man and his son near a wooded area near a lake, said Dave Battle, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Anchorage area biologist.</p>

<p>"The bear stopped about 20 yards in front of the people. The man had a gun but did not shoot the bear because it retreated into the woods after the charge," Battle was quoted as saying by the Anchorage Daily News.</p>

<p>Battle said the bear weighed more than 400 pounds and didn't have any sign of prior injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This incident brings Anchorage's tally of bear deaths to 16 so far this year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Battle, the total includes 13 black bears killed by responding agencies and three by citizens who reported defending their lives or property.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that the tally so far is "average to high" as last year a total of 14 black bears were killed by agencies and six more were killed by citizens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A white American co-worker heard Varshney speaking in Hindi on his mobile with his dying brother-in-law in India, AL.COM reported on Monday.</p>

<p>Varshney on 26 September 2022 “received a video call from his elderly brother-in-law KC Gupta, [who] was on his deathbed in India and called to say goodbye to Varshney".</p>

<p>“Knowing the dire situation and that he may never have the opportunity to speak to (Gupta) again, Varshney stepped into an empty cubicle and accepted the call,” the suit said.</p>

<p>The two spoke for about two minutes in Hindi when another worker interrupted Varshney and asked whether he was on a video call, which he confirmed, as per the suit filed in June.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suit claims the other worker was “intimidated by Varshney speaking in a language he did not understand” and “falsely and intentionally” reported that the Indian-American “committed a security violation by revealing confidential information and/or accepting this call during a confidential meeting or with confidential information in the background".</p>

<p>Varshney immigrated to the US in 1968 and settled in Huntsville where the family&nbsp;became American citizens. His wife Sashi has worked at NASA since 1989.</p>

<p>Nath, employed at ManpowerGroup since 2008, held the positions of Assistant Manager (Finance) and later Manager (Finance). He acted as a crucial link between the company's outside payroll vendor and various departments like HR and finance. With access to the monthly payroll and reimbursement data limited to only three officers, Nath took advantage of his position.</p>

<p>Every month, the payroll vendor would prepare the pay register based on data provided by Nath. This register would then pass through the Director (HR) and the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) for approval before being sent back to Nath for the final step of salary release to the bank.</p>

<p>It was at this final stage that Nath allegedly tampered with the data, surreptitiously inserting his wife's name, Sasmita Raul, and assigning her a salary amount.</p>

<p>He also manipulated his own salary figures. Once the manipulated payroll file was uploaded to the bank portal by Nath, all employees' salaries, including his wife's, were transferred accordingly.</p>

<h2><strong>Fraudulent transactions</strong></h2>

<p>Upon conducting an internal investigation, the company discovered that Nath had been uploading the manipulated payroll file using another employee's computer system. After completing the process, he would delete the file from the system to cover his tracks.</p>

<p>Following his suspension on 11 December, 2022, Nath was summoned before an internal committee to explain the discrepancies.</p>

Indian man sneakily puts unemployed wife on payroll for over a decade, defrauds company of millions

<p>A UNESCO heritage committee of scientific advisors has&nbsp;recommended that Australia's Great Barrier Reef be not placed on a list of world heritage sites that are in "danger". The committee, however, stressed that the 2,300-kilometre (1,243-mile) network of corals, the biggest in the world, remains under 'serious threat'&nbsp;from global heating and water pollution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The committee's decision might come as a relief for Australia which has been lobbying for years to keep the reef off the endangered list as it could lead to losing its heritage status - thereby heavily affecting the tourism business.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the reef contributes over $4 billion to the Australian economy and supports some 64,000 jobs. Prior to COVID-19, over two million tourists visited the reef, located off Australia's northeast coast every year.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>PM Albanese acknowledges more need to be done</strong></h2>

<p>"The draft decision cites 'significant progress' being made on climate change, water quality, and sustainable fishing – all putting the reef on a stronger and more sustainable path," said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, reflecting on UNESCO's decision.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Albanese, however, acknowledged that the decision did not put the reef or its future "in the clear".</p>

<p>Albanese, who leads the centre-left Labor government in Canberra, said more steps were needed to maintain the status quo.</p>

<p>His government has already pledged over $800 million to protect the reef, withdrawn funding for dams and denied permission to a coal mine that could have potentially affected the reef's water quality.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was last year in November that UNESCO suggested that the reef should be put on the danger list after frequent incidents of coral bleaching. Bleaching happens when the water warms too much, causing corals to expel the colourful algae living in their tissues and turn white.</p>

<p>A member of the staff told the Daily that the restaurant pivoted to the 'racy pole dancing' strategy since the business remained mild after opening. To bring in more money, the restaurant hired well-built performers and soon enough, the customers started coming in.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Initially, there were just six actors offering relatively normal dance performances. When customers filmed at the restaurant and shared the videos online, the restaurant owner saw it as a promotional opportunity," said one of the workers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Eyewitnesses reported that the plane dropped its banner, indicating something was wrong. Moments later, it hit the water approximately 30 yards from the shore and flipped over, slowly gliding into the ocean in an almost surreal movie-like scene.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Pilot 'not hurt'</strong></h2>

<p>Fortunately, the pilot, the sole occupant of the plane, managed to escape the aircraft on his own, thanks to the quick response of the Hampton Beach lifeguards who assisted him ashore.</p>

<p>Authorities confirmed that the pilot did not sustain any injuries and was evaluated at the scene. The crashed aircraft was subsequently pulled from the ocean using a rope by lifeguards and the Hampton Fire Department.</p>

Did Apple tweak its rule to allow Twitter's rebranding to X on App Store?

<p>Guillermo Sohnlein, who is the co-founder of OceanGate, said in an interview that the company now aims to send people to planet Venus by the year 2050, just weeks after the company's expedition to the sunken Titanic ship ended in five deaths.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US-based OceanGate's submersible met with a catastrophic implosion that killed all five on board when it was on a voyage to see the century-old wreck of the Titanic in June.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Those who lost their lives were the company's CEO <span>Stockton Rush</span>, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, UK businessman Hamish Harding, and submersible captain Paul-Henri Nargeolet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interview with Insider, Sohnlein, who is also the founder and chairman of Humans2Venus, said that he is hopeful his new company can host a colony of 1,000 humans on Venus, the hottest planet in our solar system.&nbsp;</p>

After Titanic, OceanGate cofounder aims to send people to Venus

<p>A terrifying yet amazing&nbsp;drone footage captured by a fisherman has revealed the&nbsp;moment a shark attacked his friend's boat, off the Palm Beach coast in Florida, USA.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Josh Jorgensen, known for producing videos for the popular BlacktipH Fishing YouTube channel, posted the footage on his Instagram account, leaving viewers shocked at the sheer power of the&nbsp;apex predator.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>While flying the drone. Jorgensen filmed two large cobia swimming alongside a bull shark. Since cobia is regarded as one of the best-tasting fishes in the ocean,&nbsp;Jorgensen's friend&nbsp;revved his boat and went into&nbsp;the waters to catch the fish.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I was flying my drone at the beach and spotted two huge cobia swimming with a bull shark.&nbsp;Cobia is one of the best-tasting&nbsp;fish in the ocean.&nbsp;So, I called my buddy Carl, and he raced over to try to catch them," said&nbsp;Jorgensen.</p>

<p>While&nbsp;Jorgensen piloted the drone, he spotted the bull shark heading towards the boat's stern and ramming itself into the outboard motors and thrashing about the water. Such was the power of the shark that the boat, weighing a few tonnes easily, started shaking.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The shark attacked the boat five times, swam away and then came back for more.&nbsp;In total, the shark attacked Carl’s boat eight times."</p>
