Elephant charges at safari truck, lifting it off the ground: WATCH

During a recent safari expedition in South Africa's Pilanesberg Game Reserve, the safari guidefound himself in a harrowing confrontation with an enraged elephant. The incident took place at the Rathlogo Bird Hide within the reserve, where tourists are allowed to get offtheir vehicles and explore the area under specific guidelines.

Unpredictable wildlife encounter

As the guests were taking a break, the safari guidenoticed anelephant bull approaching their location. One of the touristscaptured footage of the encounter, which later spread on social media.

While elephants generally avoid confrontations with humans or vehicles when given adequate space, their behaviour can become unpredictable, particularly when theyenter a heightened hormonal state known as musth, marked by increased aggression.

Recognising the signs of the elephant's aggressive state, the safari guide sprang into action. He swiftly ushered some of the group members back onto the safari vehicle for safety. However, many guests remained in the bird hide and parking area. In an attempt to deter the approaching elephant, herevved the vehicle's engine and advanced towards the elephant, accompanied by loud shouts and door slams.

Initially, it seemed that the guide'saggressive response had succeeded in warding off the elephant, as it retreated momentarily. Butthe respite was short-lived asit resumed its advance, ultimately ramming its tusks into the vehicle's bulbar and lifting the front end off the ground. After several forceful lifts, the elephant eventually abandoned its assault and moved away.

A similar episode occurred at Sri Lanka's Yala National Park in 2023 when a wild elephant shattered the glass window of a van. Driven by its hunger, the elephant then rummaged through the driver's seat. In a desperate attempt to pacify the elephant, one of the tourists offered a packet of chips. Surprisingly, the elephant, momentarily appeased, retreated into the dense jungle.
