Egypt's capital city Cairo is one of the most famous capital cities of the world, itis known for itsrich history which spans beyond 1,000 years.

However, the country has decided to change its capital and the recent satellite imagery has hinted that its megaproject replacement will soon take place.

The country had announced the plan to shift its capital in 2015 and had stated that the new city will be constructed, which has been currently dubbed the New Administrative Capital (NAC).

The government authorities have not yet finalised the name of the city which will cover a 700 square kilometre (270 square-mile) wide area around 45 kilometres (28 miles) east of Cairo.

The construction had begun not long before and the cameras on NASA’s Landsat 9 satellite had clicked fresh images of the development which appeared like a bunch of lines in the desert.

How does the new capital city of Egypt now appear from satellite?

Now in August 2024, the lines have changed and some of the mega landmarks of the megaproject can be seen.

In the beige of the desert, the waved line of green is Green River Park which has been designed to give space for both pedestrians and cyclists.

It will also feature lakes and some of the native flora of Egypt.

The new capital will also have many government buildings amongst which the most visible ones are the ministry of defence dubbed “the Octagon”.

From the satellite, it appears like a crop circle, which is more circular than octagonal. But the centre has a series of octagon-shaped buildings.

Initially, it was estimated that the project would cost $45 billion, however, recent estimates suggest that it will go closer to $58 billion.

“Cairo isn’t suitable for the Egyptian people,” said Khaled El-Husseiny, spokesperson for the project, while speaking to The Guardianin 2018.

“There are traffic jams on every street, the infrastructure can’t support the population, and it’s very crowded," he added.

The new city has been designed to house more than sixmillion people and this is likely to relieve some of the pressure from the old capital.
