Delhi-NCR might face transportation issues on 22 and 23 August because of the strike organised by auto and taxi drivers' unions. They are protesting against app-based cab services including Uber and Ola. The protest includingover 15 unions from Delhi-NCR will result inover four lakh auto-rickshaws and taxis remaining off the roads.
The primary reason for the strike is to protest against app-based services for the adverse impact it has created on the livelihoods of auto-rickshaw drivers.
The union alleges that the central and state governments have failed to address their issues about inadequate compensation, despite raising concerns multiple times.
Kishan Verma, the president of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union spoke to IANS, and said, they have been writing to the government for several years about the companies like Ola and Uber. He added that the companies present their side, the government presents its side, but no one listens to the auto-rickshaw drivers.
As per Mint, the president of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union has accused private Uber and Ola taxi drivers of getting involved in unethical activities, including smuggling, and alcohol and drug trading.
Kishan Verma said, “Employment for auto and taxi drivers, which is being affected or taken away, must be addressed. Private Ola and Uber taxis are involved in smuggling, and there is also trade in alcohol and drugs. To address these issues, we are going on strike. The organisation has decided that on August 22 and 23, all auto and taxi services in Delhi NCR will be suspended."

He highlighted that the ride-hailing service companies chargea 45% commission on their trips. The union suggests a ban on app-based cab services and asks for government-backed applications. He said, “We are not getting anything. E-rickshaws and bikes with private number plates are plying on roads."
During the strike on 22 and 23 August, vehicles, including autos, economic radio taxis, kali-peeli taxis, and taxis with all-India tourist permits, will not be functional in the capital city and its adjoining areas.
