The left-arm pacer removed Englishman Phil Salt in the first over to pull level with Chahal's 96 wickets before going past him in the third over with the wicket of Salt's opening partner Ben Duckett. India pacer Mohammed Shami, returning to international cricket, missed out on making it to the playing XI as skipper SKY decided to 'stick to our strengths." England finished the powerplay at 45/2 with Arshdeep taking both wickets. England skipper Jos Buttler and his deputy Harry Brook added 48 runs for the third wicket before spinner Varun Chakravarthy worked his magic. Chakravarthy produced two sensational balls in the eighth over to send England vice-captain Brook and explosive batter Liam Livingstone back to halt the proceedings. Brook and Livingstone both failed to read Varun's mystery spin and were bowled out in space of three balls. At the halfway mark, England were four down for 74 with Buttler still on the crease. England, however, continued to lose wickets at regular intervals before being all out for 132 in the allotted 20 overs. Only three England batters reached the double figure, and one of them was bowler Jofra Archer, who scored 12. Apart from him, Buttler played an innings of 68 while Brook managed 17. For India, Chakravarthy took 3/23 while Axar, Hardik, and Arshdeep took two wickets apiece.

During an interview on JioCinema, Hesson explained that not retaining Chahal allowed additional flexibility to RCB which was attempting to secure both him and pacer Harshal Patel in the auction.

“He’s (Chahal) an outstanding bowler and I guess when you come to every cycle you have to decide who are you going to retain. It’s one of those things where if you only retain three players, then that’s an extra four crores in the auction,” Hesson said.

However, once at the auction table, things went south for RCB as the order of player's names up for auction was changed, which pushed Chahal's name down the order.

“That potentially gave us the chance to get both Harshal and Yuzi. But then the order of the auction came up and Yuzuvendra Chahal was at number 65. Because we retained that many players, we were going to get bullied,” said Hesson.

As a result, RCB management took the less-risky call and signed Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga for Rs 10.75 crores - a decision that didn't age well in hindsight.

"Yuzi (Chahal) is one I will be frustrated with until I have finished my career and probably beyond. He is an outstanding bowler," added Hesson.

IPL 2024: Ex-RCB coach Mike Hesson reveals why Yuzvendra Chahal was not picked in auction

Yuzvendra Chahal created history in Jaipur on Monday (Apr 22) by picking his 200th IPL wicket, a feat achieved by no other bowler in the tournament's 17-year-long history. Chahal reached the milestone during the match against Mumbai Indians.

Coming in to bowl his first over of the match, Chahal flighted one on middle and leg that stopped a bit on the batter. Mohammed Nabi, who had been playing well at the stage was outfoxed by the slowness of the ball and turned the face of the bat early.
Yuzvendra Chahal's selection in the ODI side and not in the T20I squad for the South Africa series left most fans, pundits, and experts confused over the spinner's future in the team. While in the lead-up to the 2023 World Cup, Chahal emerged as the first name on the team sheet, the selection committee overlooked him heading into the tournament, picking Kuldeep Yadav as the lone spinner for the marquee event.

With the next major assignment - the 2024 T20 World Cup, just seven months away (scheduled to start in June next year), Chahal's omission from the shortest format indicates the selection committee's plans going forward.

Harbhajan Singh, who during his days had been in Chahal's shoes, admitted such a call is beyond his understanding and feels Chahal returning to the Indian Team just after the World Cup is like BCCI offering him a lollypop to suck on.

I like the challenge: it tells me I need to work hard so that I come back,” added the leggie. Chahal made his ODI debut for India in 2016 and has played 72 games so far, taking 121 wickets including a couple of five-wicket hauls. 'I’m used to it,' says Yuzvendra Chahal about India's ODI World Cup squad snub

Former India star Yuvraj Singh has highlighted key factors in India’s ODI World Cup squad as the Men in Blue prepare for the marquee tournament. Yuvraj, Player of the Tournament in the 2011 edition, reckons India will miss the services of Yuzvendra Chahal who was not picked for the tournament. Chahal was dropped in favour of Ravichandran Ashwin, who will be part of the 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup after Axar Patel got injured.

Chahal could be a big miss

“Leaving out Yuzvendra Chahal could be a mistake, could be a worry. At least could have kept him in the squad. A leg-spinner is someone who will always take wickets for you. Kuldeep is doing fantastic. But Chahal could have been dangerous on turning tracks and slower wickets. Hardik giving you the balance of a third seamer, you could have picked Yuzvendra Chahal,” said Yuvraj while speaking to the Week.

India on Thursday, September 28 announced their final squad for the ODI World Cup that saw the return of Ashwin in place of Axar. However, despite being an integral part of the team in recent months, Chahal was dropped while Ashwin was drafted in the final squad. The experienced campaigner was part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad but had not played in the ODI format since January 2022. He was picked in the Indian team for the Australia series before the World Cup and will now apply his trade in the main tournament.

The numbers game favours Chahal in the limited-overs format, having scalped 121 wickets in 72 ODI matches for India while Ashwin has 155 wickets in 115 matches. Ashwin has been India’s best Test bowler in the last decade and has amassed 489 wickets in the longer format. In the T20I format, Chahal leads the list for most wickets with 96 for India while Ashwin stands with 72 scalps.

Considering Ashwin’s ability to bat, the team management has opted for a safer choice in Ashwin compared to Chahal. The Indian team will now look to reap rewards on the bigger front when they start their World Cup campaign against Australia on Sunday, October 8 in Ashwin’s hometown Chennai. India, however, will start their warm-up campaign against England on Saturday, September 30.

Ind vs Aus: Yuzvendra Chahal shares heartfelt message for R Ashwin after 2nd ODI

On Monday (September 18), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India's squads for the upcoming Australia ODIs, which kicks off on Friday (September 22). There were two squads announced as KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with regular captain Rohit Sharma, along with vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli and Kuldeep Yadav, returning for the final ODI. While R Ashwin's return has made heads turn, Yuzvendra Chahal continues to miss out and this has not been well-received by former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Axar Patel's injury, during the just-concluded Asia Cup, led to the return of Ashwin and Washington Sundar in the ODI squad.

However, Chahal's omission has left Harbhajan Singh baffled.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said, “Yuzvendra Chahal should have been here. He has not been given an opportunity. It is beyond my understanding. Either he has fought with someone or he has said something to someone, I don't know. If we talk only about skill, his name should have been there in this team because a lot of Team India players are resting."

With his World Cup dreams looking bleak, Chahal has been busy representing Kent in County Cricket. Meanwhile, Ashwin and Sundar have a wonderful opportunity to perform well in the upcoming three ODIs and stake a claim in the CWC squad.

Talking about Axar, he is expected to recover and, hence, is part of the squad for the final ODI (subject to fitness).

Further, Bhajji opened up on the Australia series. He stated, "Team India have to continue the winning habit they developed in the Asia Cup. They have the ability to beat Australia as well. The team is slightly weak for the first two matches but I believe this slightly weak team can also come out on top against them."

“Australia were playing against South Africa and India were playing against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. Australia are a different team. You will have to be at your best to beat Australia because they have decent batting till No. 7 or No. 8 and they have solid hitters,” Harbhajan further added.

India will enter the Australia ODIs on a positive note following the Asia Cup 2023 win. Australia, on the other hand, will look to build up strongly for the forthcoming ODI World Cup -- which starts on October 5 in India -- after a 2-3 series loss to South Africa, in the African nation.

'Either he has fought with someone or...': Harbhajan baffled by Chahal's omission from Australia ODIs

Despite knowing that Indian batters have been left wanting against left-arm seam bowling early on, and what this genre of pace bowling is capable of doing, the selectors opted to leave out a left-arm bowler in the provisional 15 squad. Besides, the absence of a leg-spinner and a frontline offie further makes it difficult for the hosts to find the right balance in the bowling order. Veteran Harbhajan Singh feels by not ticking these two boxes, India might have missed a trick.

While Harbhajan backs Suryakumar Yadav to make his way into the final XI for the CWC, the 2011 World Cup winner feels overlooking Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal might prove costly down the line.

"I think there are two people missing from the team. One is Yuzvendra Chahal, and the second is Arshdeep Singh. Because I think if a left-arm seamer can bring the new ball in [to the right-hander] at the start, it makes a huge difference in the game. Because if he can get two early wickets… It's not like a right-hander can't do that, but left-arm seamers get a natural angle," Harbhajan said during a chat organised by Star Sports.

Citing examples of how top-of-the-line left-arm quicks in Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan) and Mitchell Starc (Australia) make an impact during crucial games, Harbhajan feels India should have picked young Arshdeep Singh as his inswingers would have been beneficial.

"You would have seen players like Shaheen Shah Afridi or Mitchell Starc, they have a huge impact. When Australia won the World Cup [in 2015], Mitchell Starc had a huge impact, dismissing Brendon McCullum first [third] ball. So incoming ball at that speed coming into a right-hander is always a challenge," Harbhajan added.

While India picked three top-class seamers in Mohammed Siraj, Shami and leader of the pack Jasprit Bumrah, they named three spinners, two alike - Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, alongside Kuldeep Yadav in the final 15 for the CWC.

The host nation didn't pick Chahal, who has been around in the white-ball circuit ever since his debut. Harbhajan said Chahal is a proven match-winner and that had he been playing for any other country than India, he would be in the playing XI, let alone in the final 15.

"The second [notable miss in the squad] is Yuzvendra Chahal," he said. "Proven match-winner. Someone who has taken more number of wickets than any other spinner. "Kent Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of India international leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for the Club’s remaining County Championship matches, subject to regulatory approval," Kent announced in an official statement. He will be available for selection in Kent’s remaining two home Championship matches against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire, as well as Kent’s away fixture against Somerset. Harbhajan Singh 'surprised' to see THIS 'pure match winner' snubbed from India's ODI World Cup squad

India's squad announcement for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 raised a lot of eyebrows for not selecting a few players. Some questions were also raised for including KL Rahul who is coming off an injury. Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had also said at the press conference that Rahul might not be available for some matches with some niggle.

The decision to select Rahul, however, did not cause much furore as did omission of ace leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. While India's 17-man squad has Kuldeep Yadav as wrist spinner, dropping Chahal hasn't gone down well with a lot of fans and former cricketers.

Speaking on the same, former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers said that it is 'disappointing' to not see Chahal in the squad. Notably, the same 17-member team is more or less going to be named for the ICC ODI World Cup which follows shortly after the Asia Cup.

Skipper Rohit Sharma had said at the squad announcement press conference that the 'door is not closed' for Chahal and that he was dropped as team wanted someone who could bat at number 8. Asia Cup 2023: AB de Villiers says dropping leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from India squad 'DISAPPOINTING'

The BCCI selectors, on Monday (August 21), announced India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad includes captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, etc., whereas it also marks the return of middle-order duo Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Yuzvendra Chahal was the notable omission from the 17-member squad for the continental tournament, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05.

On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team, it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs, has claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

He can do that for us." The 36-year-old added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. 'Only way we could have...': Rohit on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, says 'World Cup door not closed on anyone'

Indian captain Rohit Sharma attended the press conference on Sunday in New Delhi for the Asia Cup 2023 squad announcement. With BCCI naming a 17-man team for the six-team tournament starting August 30, a few old faces returned to the ODI setup for the first time in many months, including KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah.

The inclusion of Suryakumar Yadav and the introduction of young Tilak Varma in the squad add value, and Rohit said the message is clear to all batters that everyone must be flexible in batting at any position, even if it means coming out of their comfort zone spot.

From having no one to fill the vacant number four and five slots to roping in four players for those places, the Asia Cup squad announcement comes as a success at the right time for India. The presence of keeper-batter Ishan Kishan as a backup to Rahul ticks another box, as the top three remain the same – Rohit, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.

After a narrow defeat in the five-match T20Is, India also went down in the second match on Sunday (August 6) in Guyana. The Hardik Pandya-led Indian team opted to bat and posted a moderate 152 for 7. Despite reducing the Windies to 129 for 8, from 126 for 4, the hosts prevailed on top due to their lower-order's power-hitting to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra reviewed India's two-wicket loss in the second T20I, on his YouTube channel, and came hard on Sanju Samson's shot selection. Samson is being used as a lower-order specialist in the five T20Is. While he came out to bat at No. 6 in the series opener, he was promoted at No. 5 -- one above captain Hardik -- but the right-hander fell for a run-a-ball 7. Even in the first T20I, he managed a run-a-ball 12.

Chopra criticised Samson's shot selection and feels his batting position should not be blamed for his poor run. In addition, the former cricketer has urged Samson to make the most of his chances to cement his spot else he might be dropped.

'Is there a place available at the top?'

"Sanju Samson played a bad shot. Shubman Gill at the start and Sanju Samson in the middle played bad shots. Sanju Samson and his fans can say that he is getting to bat at the wrong number. But is there a place available at the top? If it's not there, what can be done?" Chopra said.

Ind vs WI, 2nd T20I: Samson and his fans can say he is getting to bat at wrong number, feels Aakash Chopra

Two of India’s premier white-ball spinners – Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, often known as 'Kul-Cha' among Indian cricket fans, were once the force to reckon with. However, after losing to England during the 2019 World Cup game, this pair got separated as the Indian Team became sceptical about playing wrist spinners in tandem.

Before being taken down for cleaners by English openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, the pair of Kul-Cha together played in 34 games, and after that show, both appeared in just three matches.

Speaking to the media after returning with figures of 4 for 6, Kuldeep said he and Chahal are relaxed about their relationship, adding instead of feeling any competition, both help each other become better bowlers and understand the value of team combinations.

India's leading spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has finally opened up on how he felt when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) didn't bid for him despite promising to go all out during the 2022 IPL auction. In a recent chat with Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube channel, Chahal detailed what happened behind the scenes and how he reacted to everything that unfolded.

After making his IPL debut in 2011 for Mumbai Indians, RCB brought him on board during the 2014 mega auction. The leg-spinner played eight seasons for them, ending as their highest wicket-taker, but the Bangalore-based franchise decided against retaining him in the 2022 auction where Rajasthan Royals bagged his services for a whopping INR 6.5 crore, with Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and SunRisers Hyderabad also bidding for him.

Elaborating on the same, Chahal revealed he was angry and disappointed at the same time and didn't even speak with the coaches or with anyone. The leg-spinner added he got his chance in the Indian team on the back of stunning performances in the IPL, and even captain Virat Kohli used to show a lot of trust in him.

"When I put my name up for the auction, they (RCB) promised me that they will go all out for me," Chahal told Ranveer Allahbadia's YouTube channel. "I said okay, but then I was very angry. I think I did not speak to the coaches for two-three days. Even when I played my first match for RR against RCB, I did not speak to anyone."

"Definitely, I felt very bad. My main journey started in 2014. I also felt very weird because I played for the franchise for eight years. I would also say that I got the India cap because of my performances for RCB because they gave me a chance to perform. From the very first match, Virat bhai showed trust in me," Chahal added.

Switch to RR actually benefited me, says Chahal

As they say, what happens, happens for good. Chahal too felt the same after spending two seasons with Rajasthan Royals, wherein he picked 48 wickets and also won the Purple Cap during the Royals' run to their second IPL final in 2022.

"Anything can happen in the auction, and then I realised that it's okay, whatever happens, happens for good. The one plus point is that after coming to Rajasthan, I became a death bowler. At RCB, my overs were finished by the 16th or 17th over. Here, my cricket growth has improved 5-10 per cent. That attachment is definitely there for RCB, but coming to Rajasthan has helped my cricket a lot," Chahal added.

ALSO READ: Not during 2023 Asia Cup, seamer Jasprit Bumrah could return sooner than expected - Reports "When I put my name up for the auction, they (RCB) promised me that they will go all out for me," Chahal told Ranveer Allahbadia's YouTube channel. "I said okay, but then I was very angry. I think I did not speak to the coaches for two-three days. Even when I played my first match for RR against RCB, I did not speak to anyone." "Definitely, I felt very bad. My main journey started in 2014. I also felt very weird because I played for the franchise for eight years. I would also say that I got the India cap because of my performances for RCB because they gave me a chance to perform. From the very first match, Virat bhai showed trust in me," Chahal added. Switch to RR actually benefited me, says Chahal As they say, what happens, happens for good. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

'At 2022 IPL auction, they promised me...': Heartbroken Yuzvendra Chahal on not getting picked by RCB

Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023: A dismal end to a robust start

Indian Premier League’s highest wicket-taker Yuzvendra Chahal revealed how shifting bases from Mumbai Indians to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 changed his life forever and what role legend Ab de Villiers played in it. Following going past Dwayne Bravo’s long-standing record of 182 wickets in the IPL during his four-wicket spell against KKR on past Thursday, Chahal, while speaking with Star Sports, admitted speaking for long hours with de Villiers one night that did wonders to him.

Chahal said upon arriving at RCB in 2014, he didn’t know the Protean legend well enough until one night when de Villiers shared a piece of advice with him, for which Chahal still thanks him whenever he meets him.

As reported by the Indian Express, Chahal, in a conversation with Star Sports, said,

“My journey changed from 2014 when I arrived at RCB, and people realised my potential. I realised my dream during my time at RCB. In the first 2-3 years, I wasn’t as close to AB sir; I had inhibitions talking to him because he is a legend. But one night, we sat and talked for many hours. He said one word, ‘balance’. I asked, what do you mean by balance?” Chahal told Star Sports.

For India, Chahal has played 72 ODIs and 75 T20Is, picking 121 and 91 wickets, respectively. IPL 2023: Yuzvendra Chahal leapfrogs Dwayne Bravo to become highest wicket-taker in IPL history

Ace Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has played under a few captains in his career, be it under MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the Indian team or Virat Kohli in both Indian colours and in the IPL. However, when asked who is the captain in IPL he likes to play most under, Chahal named his current franchise (Rajasthan Royals) skipper Sanju Samson as his favourite, adding he is very similar to Dhoni.

After spending seven years at the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), RR picked Chahal ahead of the 2022 auction, and the leggie shined under Samson in the first season, picking up 27 wickets. Speaking to the Humans of Bombay, Chahal revealed the common thing between all those above-mentioned skippers.

"I think, all three captains whom I have played under, I have gotten that liberty that a bowler requires, whether it's Mahi bhai, Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. So yeah, that's the one thing I have gotten," Chahal told Humans of Bombay.

Chahal said since joining RR, he improved at least 10%, and all is because of Sanju Samson. He also added that Sanju told him to bowl however and wherever he likes in his quota of four overs, instead giving him instructions to sticking to a particular line or length.

"In IPL, Sanju Samson is definitely my favourite. I feel like he is literally very similar to Mahi bhai as like him, he is very calm and chill. The 10 per cent or whatever growth I have had as a bowler in the last year, it is all because of Sanju. He told me, ‘You have four overs, bowl whatever you want to, you are free from my side'," Chahal added.

As things stand, Chahal has 12 wickets to his name in seven matches, and even in the game against the RCB at M Chinnaswamy, he returned with figures of one for 28 in four overs.
